Freaking the efff out!! Help!!

i was trying to install my new spacers today, freaked out about halfway thru with the upper plenum up, realized i didnt have an inch pound toqure wrench but a foot pound, didnt go low enough to convert, when i was doing it myself inside the plenum ibetween the parts on the gold thing, i think its the ISO thermal thning, i overtightend a nut to the point whre it made a ping, i got a freind whos a mechnanic to finish up but totaly forgot about the fact of the over tigghtened bolt. now when i rev up about after 4000 i hear a slight ping

what the hell should i do, im gonna get full install by a mechanic of the spacers tommorow.

do you think i didnt any permenant damage??!

please let me know asap im freaking out to the point where i wanna shoot my foot for ever thinking i can do it.

helppp

Sorry man, no clue. That sucks though. Gotta be more careful with your baby, excitement is like a drug. Too much of it makes you do crazy things.

you may have jsut snapped a bolt off to be honest...or when you installed the spacer did you make sure you got the Plastic spacers in the correct spots? if not then they can sucked down the intake runners...One last thing to check is when your installing something like this on your car if you use your opposite hand to tighten down the bolts thats typically the correct torque specs. The plenum bolts are very easy to snap if you over tighten them..I have snapped at least 5-6 now....typically when you pull off the top plenum you can remove them from the lower plenum fairly easily if there is still enough bolt sticking out.

OK, I think I sort of figured out where you were in the install. The first piece you install is the Aramid ISO thermal gasket. It's on page 3 of the instuctions. To do that you remove the upper and lower plenums. The Aramid replaces the gasket below the lower plenum. You then re-install the lower plenum. Is this the place where you saw the "gold thing"? If so, that is not the Copper ISO unit (Copper Throttle Body Heater). It is a metal gasket (intake manifold collector cover) that attaches to the inside of the lower plenum. This is also the first place you would have needed the inch-pound torque wrench.

I doubt you broke the "gold thing", but you may have bent it or snapped one of the bolts. This could definitely be the cause of your "ping" noise at 4K RPMs. It might be vibrating just right to cause your "ping". But, it's probably not the end of the world. You were doing just fine up to this point, but I sense you lost your confidence when you realized your mistake.

If you're definitely taking it to someone to finish the install, then explain this situation to them. You really need to remove the lower plenum again and inspect the Aramid gasket you installed. If it's OK, then proceed with the install. But at a minimum the lower plenum bolts must be removed and re-installed to the proper torque specifications. This isn't optional. You can check the "gold thing" while you're in there. If you broke a bolt, you'll need to replace it in the very near future, like this week. It is one of the original bolts. The MD kit didn't replace these. But you can put the lower plenum back on minus one bolt so you can drive your car. But make sure you replace it!

The Copper ISO unit came in the package from MD. It's pretty obvious since it's the only copper item in there. This goes between the throttle body and the upper plenum. It's also the last piece you install, so you haven't gotten to it yet.

EDIT: I think you can do all of this yourself. Just make sure you have the inch-pounder. If you can't get your hands on one, see page 6 of the instructions. Take everything back apart and start the install over again. Just be VERY careful removing the lower plenum bolts and inspect the "gold thing". I think you'll do just fine.

Take it back apart and give it a through inspection.

You can put it all back together with a nutdriver and a pair of gloves.

Try installing 6 spacers in a row at a dyno day.

Please always read the instructions first. It says to first practice on bolts not related to your car.

That way you will know what it feels like to reach the desired torque level.

You don't want to lean how to use a torque wrench while working on your car.

Ya gotta jack the car up a little bit. I built two simple wooden ramps that get the car up about 3 inches. I use them to lift the car a little if I'm putting the big jack under the front or just to give me a little lift for working on the engine. Makes a huge difference. If I'm doing something major I'll put the whole thing up on jackstands. That's what I did with my spacer/grounding kit install.

I did that the first time I used my inch-pounder. The big torquer has a very definitive "clink" sound when it hits the mark, but the inch-pounder is a much more subtle, muffled sound. You really have to do it by touch and sight rather than sound. I crushed a washer on the fuel rail when I replaced the injectors on my old Maxima. I was sure I'd wrecked it, but I just undid it and re-torqued it and it was fine.

UPDATE!

I went to the dealer, i apprently, not only voided my warrenty due to tinted windows (HA!), but because i had the ztube installed. which is complete and utter bulls**t.

it ended up costing me, 385$ to "Re-Instate" my warrenty, since it was not factory anymore and they wont work around the modifications, and went through my trunk and saw the instrucitons to the spacers install, and totally shot me down for it, replaced my STOCK spacers that were perfectly fine.

sooo all in all i learned 2 things

1. NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER GO TO FETTE INFINITI OF CLIFTON NJ!

2. i am a moron for taking it thier becuase ramsey doesnt have any problem with that i wouldnt have paid a dime for replacing a broken bolt, non the less pay 400$

thanks for the help guys.

so in turn, my advice and help to you, dont listen to a ****ty new dealer, espcially fette infiniti, of clifton nj.

later, and thanks.

They can't void your warranty for having tinted windows or for the Z-Tube. I would challenge this. Print a copy of the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act and bring it with you. They have to prove a modification caused the failure of a part you were trying to get covered under warranty. The problem they'll have is that one, you weren't trying to get anything covered under warranty, and two, they didn't prove anything.

I would have known you were so close to me

I would have looked at it for you.
Fette took over Lynne's Infiniti customer base.
I passed by there the other day.

Not that the dealer can do anything for me anymore anyway
