Engine noise while running compression checck?
Hi guys...
I am new to this forum. Just got my buddy into an 06 G35 with premium package.
Totally stock other than that... But not for long...
Plz forgive me if I'm asking this question in the wrong area..
OK, while running a compression check on his new ride, I would hear a loud click(more like a pop) every few revolutions of the motor.
The compression check came out great... getting 125 psi on the first stroke, 150 on the second, and peak of 175 on the third stroke.... all cylinders within 5 psi of each other.
Also ran a leak-down test at 80 psi... all cylinders were within 77-79 psi
So very happy with the conditoin of the valves and rings at 34K miles.
So was the pop noise due to the type of VVT technology? as in the sprocketed cams?
On a side note.... With no test equipment hooked up and all plugs still out, the motor turned over silky smooth and extremely quiet... no pop. And while turning the engine thru several rotations by hand, it also felt very smooth. Quite a bit of initial friction to start turning the crank, but smooth if you kept it moving.
Also, one other question... When we got the car, it was quite rough sounding when shutting the motor off... similar to a motor with fouled plugs that cause it to diesel.. I initially thought it was due to the high compression ratio, but now with the new laser platinum plugs, it seems to be better when you shut it off...??? The NGK double plats we pulled out were sooted up(white) with cheep gas deposits.
Thanks!
