exposing intake ?

i just installed an Injen cai on my 07 G35. While installing i noticed that if i did not put the styrofoam back on the driver side where the cai is the filter would be totally exposed to the outside air. the instructions informed to cover it up with the styrofoam cause it would induce turbulence. can anyone explane more on this? i have seen people leave there exposed. it makes more sense that way. the way i have it right now has it kinda confined.

yea that's what the instructions say, that if there's too much air the turbluence will cause the engine to stall. that'd be fun at WOT wouldn't it?
