I love the sound of the coupe and would like to make changes to my exhaust to have a similar sound. I was planning on replacing from the catalytic converter back. Any ideas? I was planning on the Stillen,however, I haven't heard any raving reviews. Most seem disappointed.

 

By the way I have a 2004 6 speed sedan, fully loaded.

 

If you don't want to go with an entire cat-back system, you could just get the Coupe midpipe ($235 + shipping from www.PerformanceNissanParts.com)...it gets rid of that crazy huge resonator the sedan's stock midpipe has. The Coupe midpipe definitely gets you closer to the G35 Coupe and FX35/45's exhaust note, but mainly below 2,500 rpm (the Z tube's sound kicks in at 3,500 and above anyhow ;-). I am very satisfied with my decision to get the Coupe midpipe over a new Y pipe...every time I hear the deeper rumble when I start her up, it puts a nice grin on my face!!! ;-)

So I take the only change you made was to the midpipe? My exhaust system from the cats back was damaged as was the bumper. Therefore, I will be replacing same. My budget is over $2,500US or $3,300CDN for the front bumper and exhaust. So I have a lot of options. The bumper can be repaired for a few hundred. Want to get it right as the costs will be picked by a third party who was responsible for the damages.

 

What is a Z tube?

 

The Z tube is the Nissan 350Z intake duct, between the
MAF and the throttle body. It replaces the baffled stock
tube on the G35. Do a search and you will find out everything
you could possibly want to know about it. Bottom line,
just get it! It's good for about 5 HP

I agree with Cato...just get the Z tube -- it's a "Must Mod!!" (and it's only $75). As far as your exhaust options, I can only speak about the Coupe midpipe and I love it. I didn't want a whole cat-back system but I wanted an exhaust note more similar to our '03 FX35, so I opted for the G35 Coupe midpipe instead and I'm very happy with it...it's not quite the same but it's a lot closer than the sedan's stock exhaust note. If you have the $$ and want a good cat-back system, then many on G35Driver.com have the Borla and Stillen cat-back systems for their Sedans. There may be a few others out there; just do a search on the Forum. Good luck!

The FX sounds great I must admit, lucky bastard. Anyway, besides the Z tube and coupe midpipe did you make any other modifications to your exhaust?

 

Nope...that's all I needed (but everyone has their own pref's ;-)

The Coupe midpipe sound is most apparent under 2,500 rpm and the Z tube sound (and power!!!) really kick in above 3,500 rpm! Most people here will agree that the Z tube is the "best bang for your buck" mod on the G35 Sedan and if you're looking for a more Coupe/FX-like exhaust note, the $235 Coupe midpipe is a great mod (although I'm not sure if it adds any HP even though it is less restrictive than the Sedan's stock midpipe). It cost me $100 at a local exhaust shop to get it installed, but then again, they're all crooks imo...you may be able to do it yourself or pay between $50-$100 USD for installation...I watched them do it -- it's an easy bolt-on replacement.

Cato, I think I'll go with your set up, 350 intake, HKS muffler. Did you replace your mid pipe? I was thinking of the coupes mid pipe, 350 intake and HKS muffler. Will this set-up work?

 

FYI - the HKS muffler (just the muffler; not an entire cat-back system) is about $400 + shipping, whereas the Coupe midpipe is $235 + shipping. I'm not saying the HKS muffler isn't good, but I personally couldn't see spending that kind of $$ for just a muffler (yielding just an improved sound) when a Borla cat-back system is about $600 and is supposed to get you a definite power increase as well as an improved exhaust note. I opted for the Coupe midpipe for a deeper exhaust note and I'm very happy. Just my $0.02. ;-)
