Factory Exhaust mod?!? Remove resonators?
Factory Exhaust mod?!? Remove resonators?
So I love the sound/tone of Infiniti' an my g35. I'd like to have it a little louder an a little more perform. I found a big resonator under around the rear door area an wonder if removal or it would give what I'm looking for an then change muffler. Any feed back would be awesome!
I'm sure it would be very raspy if you did that, I would consider removing the muffler and welding a straight pipe in place. You can YouTube it to give you and idea. Or you can get a coupe midpipe to give you a bit more sound.
Yeah, because the muffler is fiberglass packed, the resonator is there to smooth out the sound. However, if you removed the resonator and replaced the muffler with a straight thru aftermarket muffler with the same in/out configuration (like a magnaflow or borla or something), it would alleviate most of the rasp.
Either way, removing the resonator is a good idea for performance sake due to a less turbulant exhaust path, but it would most likely sound like a$$ with the stock muffler.
I basically did this with my coupe: remove resonator, replace the new section with straight pipe, switch muffler to a magnaflow muffler, and get all the intake mods (k&n panel filter, 5/16 spacer, ztube). It basically sounds like an amplified version of the stock system, but also gives MUCH better flow. It has some drone without the intake mods, however, that virtually disappears when you add the spacer, tube and filter.

Damn, bro.

It's only been two months, so what did you decide? You know there is another option, the OE cats is where 80% of the restriction is, replacing them with HFCs (high flow cats) will give you much more growl along with a wee bit of rasp. HFCs will give you around 6 extra whp using the OE exhaust, that's increase you'll feel and hear!

Below is my experience:
1st set Fast Intentions HFC (300 cell metallic), exhaust had a deeper sound and more power through out the entire powerband. Down side only lasted 90K miles untill the welds broke.
2nd set Kinetix HFC, planned on trading the car in so didn't spend the extra money. That was a mistake, the cats were more restrictive and felt they lost power through out the power band. Only plus side, the cats lasted until the my car died a 105K miles later.
2003 G35 5AT coupe setup was a K&N drop in filter, 2006 Airbox for a Manual, Moterdyne 1/2" spacer, and Invidian cat back exhaust.
