Safety Pinch Feature - Child Proofing for windows

Moderator, not sure where to place this very important topic for all members to see. Please move to a more visible location if necessary. Thanks !!

Hey folks,

Not sure if you have been following the news about children who have been dying because of the automatic rollup feature on windows, choking them to death. I live in Canada, and the latest death happened just this week, where a toddler somehow unstrapped herself from a child seat, stuck her head out the window, and the 6 year old stepped or pushed the window swtich which rolled it up in one shot.

On TV they did a documentary of this issue, and showed that the window motors are so powerful that it can slice a fruit or vegetable in half, and cruch a soda can.

They also mentioned that 10% of luxury vehicles have a safety mechanism that will roll the window back down if it senses pressure from something in the way, much like a garage door opener.

And they also said that if the other 90% of cars do not have this device, it can be purchased for as little as $8-$10.

Hilary Clinton and mothers in the US are lobbying for car manufacturers to install this device, but believe it or not, the car companies are lobbying for the opposite. Their claim is that a car jacker can simply put their hand in the way while the window is going up, and gain entry into the vehicle or cause a threat or harm to the driver..

So my question to you is the following. Does the G, FX, M, etc, and other Infiniti vehicles have this safety feature on the windows, and if not, do you guys know about this aftermarket add-on and think it's worth installing ???

thanks

Neil

p.s. I hope you don't mind that I remain on this forum, since it is with great sadness and excitement at the same time, that I just sold my G35 coupe for an FX45 black/black, more practical with a kid and for road trips, and for snow...

My '05 sedan came with this feature on all 4 windows and the sun roof. It's standard on any windows that have auto up/down capability.

Your G35 most likely had it on all windows while your FX35 most likely only has it on the front windows. Nissan calls this an 'anti-pinch' system. I have never seen this offered as an aftermarket option due to the complete integration in to the vehicle. The aftermarket ones I have seen will merely stop the motor, it won't actually reverse them, and if the kids foot is still on the 'UP' button the motor will most likely keep going.

My question is: What are young kids doing alone in cars with the keys in the ignition???????????

Seems like this is more of a parenting problem then a mechanical problem.

Oh, and if I remember right, it is on average 1.5 kids per year killed this way. Sure, it is a danger, but how much lobbying needs to be done? It seems like there are more important dangers to figure out first.

Also, this problem could almost be eliminated by a different switch design that would make it impossible to accidently raise the windows. Foreign cars have been using them for years, but American manufacturers haven't been able to figure it out...

I agree with you on responsibility on the parents for not leaving kids alone in a vehicle. I am not one of those parents, but wanted to be safe than sorry in case something happens. I guess I will have to pull out a soda can or vegetable, and try to see if my FX45 has this anti-pinch system you are talking about...

If the 2005 G35 sedan had it, then I would imagine all the other models had it for that year. My G35 coupe (sold) and my new FX45 were/are 2004's....

See the design of the switches? Thats the new federal mandated system.

To roll up a window, a switch must be pulled up. No more protruding forward/backward switches that can easily be manipulated by a foot to roll up a window...

Definitely a parenting issue. 1.5 a year, that's funny. We have a saying in the Navy, "One person breaks their arm, the whole ship puts on a cast." Basically all the normal people pay and have to change their lives because of 1 or 2 idiots.
