My Debadging experience
My Debadging experience
Well, let me tell you guys that if you own a black car and you, like me, cant live with the fact that cars will get scratched no matter what... I suggest you dont do this.
I did this yesturday... I took the G35 and INFINITI letters out after almost 2 hours and a full goo gone bottle. Right now, I can still see the INFINITI and G35 letters at an angle. I used Zainos Clay Bar after goo gone and that helped a little, but not 100%
Now I have little scratches (even though I was reallly careful) which I will have to take off after I buy my Orbital Polish. Goo Gone is so strong, that it hazed up my stop (the one below the G35 emblem). Whoever does this debadging thing, I hope you have 3M Plastic Cleaner and 3M Plastic Plolish. I had them on my stops before the debadging and after goo gone the stop below the G35 was completely messed up. Water/ZainoCarWash did not help at all. Not even ClayBaring it. I reaplied 3M Plastic Cleaner/Polish and now it looks like new agian.
As for the end result, it does look better, but I have little scratches and I can still see INFINITI G35 at an angle. Im sure that the letters will disappear after I wash several times and especially after using the Orbital, but I am affraid that some of the scratches might stay. Anyone on a Black debadged perfectly?
EDIT - Let me add that I got the car at 8 miles 3 weeks ago and has not been drivien for longer than 10 mins under the sun, so its not like the sun or any other thing made the glue stronger

i debadged my black coupe..just the G35 it looks good at certain angles but at certain angles you can still see the shadow of the G35. there are very fine scratches from the debadge that you can only see if youre looking for it. mine has been baking in the sun though so that is probably why.
Diesel1 how did you remove those light scratches? I have those light ones too that arent all that visible unless u put it right below the sun.
I put som scratch X over the INFINITI and G35 thingies and that took good care of em. This sunday, Ill wash again and hopefully it goes away. Im going to try to order an Orbital polish overnight delivery to use that.

question, i heard it's much simpler than this...
1.heat up
2.use dental floss to take off badges
3.WD-40
4.clean the mess with soap/water/wax stuff...
doesnt this work without leaving scratches?
btw; i havent done this since i dont have time for an hour in these days.

Those are the steps. Some people suggest WD-40 and some Goo-Gone. I used Goo-Gone as I read more people suggesting it. The problem is that the doublesided tape that holds the letters to the car take a loooong time to take out. While the steps seem short and easy, the actual job takes around 1.5 hours. Not only does it take a long time, but inevitably, you get scratches. The only reason I did this debadging was because the 5 in G35 had a sharp tip which destroyed 1 microfiber towel. If you can live with little scratches, then go ahead.

When using the googone or bug/tar remover go ahead and sacrifice a microfibre towl to the detailing gods.........I put bug/tar remover on the microfiber and all the glue came off the car in less than 5 min
Yeah, I just took my emblems off too (only the G35 and INFINITI) and left the big symbol on (wanted to match one big symbol in the front grill and one big symbol in the rear. I used a product called Desolve, I believe it's made by the same people as Goo Gone. I had a couple of scratches on mine maybe because I it was taking forever to come off. I too had the shadow of the INFINITI left on my ride, but not the G35 shadow. I tried to wax and polish it off myself, but no luck. So I just went to a body shop and they used some type of wax or compound and now there is no shadow left, even at any angle you look at it. So I was happy.
IP should not show at all. I basically debadged like right off the dealer as She hasnt been touched by sun for longer than 10 mins. I checked today, and I can barely see the letters. I dont worry about them letters as I know they will come out next time I wash. My problem is the god damn scratches.
I dedaged the "infiniti" the day after I got the car home from the dealer.
I was left with alot of scratches around the letters. So much som that you could read the letters because of the scrathches around them.
I was able to reduce the scratches by about 90% by using a menzerna polish designed to polish out 3000 grit sanding marks. I followed it with a finer polish. All is well now. Unless you knew the scratches were there, you'd never see them anymore.

I had the same deal with my coupe too, what I suggest is you go to a body shop, they usually have a heavy duty polisher thatll clear up the scratches with no problem. I had several small scratches using the "floss" routine, but the simple fact that the letters are on there so tightly, its almost impossible to get it done perfectly. The stuff that the body shop uses I believe is by 3M and is used to buff and polsih out cars after a freshly painted car, usually even takes off a slight bit of clear coat off the car, which is usually how far people have gone with those small scratches.
