I love the internet. . . . Mirror rattle has plaguing me since I picked up my 05 6MT. I knew it was internal to the mirror, dispite the "dealers" attempted fix of applying the felt to the wire cover. I would have fixed it myself, but always feared disassembly of the mirror and breaking the plastic.

Since Infiniti had updated our mirrors in 06 with the Gentex 453 series, I was wondering if anyone has noticed any rattles on 06 or 07 Coupes or Sedans with these mirrors. My girlfriend has one in her 06 G35 Sedan and it is as quite as a church mouse. If this is true, all I need to do is convince my Service manager (who has already changed my mirror twice with the early Gentex 313version) to update my mirror with the 06 version. The newer mirrors seem to be much more solid and rattle free.

 

The silicone method works great. I just did it 10 minutes ago and put it back in and no rattles. It's true about the plastic being soft. Make sure anyone who does this separates the two sections at a point where it doesn't show or be very very careful.

 

Shooter, thanks so much for your post. The mirror came off of the windshield pretty easily and thanks to your pics I was confident I wasn't going to screw anything up. The hard part was getting the two halves apart but a carefully placed steak knife allowed me to open it wide enough to get the tiny screw driver in there. I followed your instuctions and I am now rattle free. The whole job took me about 30 mins. GREAT POST!

 

I'm glad people are still finding this thread useful. My mirror is still rattle free after 3 years!

No one ever answered the qustion about the Gentex series 453 mirror. It replaces the early 313 version which seems to have all the rattles. Does anyone have any issues with that one? It comes on the 06 and later G35s. My mirror is not all that bad after 2 replaced by dealer, but since the car has so many rattles, it's hard to tell where they are coming from.

 

I don't know which mirror I have, but its an 06 and still has rattles

 

just pried mine in half today. i got a hook type tool and wedged it in the light sensor and pulled it apart like that... worked well since the plastic was 100% unscratched.

i put felt pads on the 4 main plastic posts in the back. hopefully thatll do it!

 

Anyone else try this recently? Supposely it's a great fix.

 

i used permatex gasket sealant 2A NON HARDENING!!!!! and used shooters directions. very easy fix and it seems to have stopped the vibration. the gasket sealant seems to expand a little and it stays flexible. thanks shooter!!

 

Hey Shooter or anyone else, Where do I buy the silicone needed for this? Does Auto Zone have it, and is there any particular brand you used?

 

I'm in the process of having my dealer replacing my early Gentex 313 homelink mirror on my 04 Coupe with the new and improved Gentex 453 (2006 and newer Infinitis) under my Elite extended warranty. The 453 has a sturdier housing with not many issues about rattling and buzzing. I have nothing to lose and it's free.

 

My dealer is ordering me a later model Gentex mirror for my 04 Coupe. I've driven in Gs from 06 and newer that have no issues to speak of with the newer mirrors. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

 

Thanks to your posts here, I tried the plastic strip fix before taking apart my mirror, and that actually did the fix. I cut 6 strips of packaging hard plastic, each <.25" x 1.5", and shoved them in between the black plastic housing and the mirror itself. 3 on top, 3 on bottom.

Since poor engineering was used, i.e. the tolerances between the mirror and the plastic housing was far too great, driving over rough roads causes it to vibrate and make the rattle noise. So the concept behind this fix is the eliminate the gap between the housing and the mirror by acting as a spacer to keep things tight.

Voila, problem resolved, no more rattles. If in the future it rattles again, I may resort to more strips to make it tighter, then resort to actually using silicone if that still doesn't work.

reminder: make sure the strips are thin enough (<.25") so they are not visible... i.e. they tuck in COMPLETELY behind the plastic housing.

 

I'm confused how exactly does the "plastic strip" method work? Do you still take apart the mirror to put them in? Where exactly do the strips go? And if pics could be posted, that would be awesome.
