05 to 06 headlight swap

so I just got done installing 06 projectors on my 05 coupe. I installed my old HID (D2R) bulbs in the projectors, they seem to be working fine but I was noticing that people on the board were saying to use the D2S bulbs. is there a reason that you need the D2S bulbs??? Do they not shine the same or some how burn up faster??

there is a coating on d2r that prevents glare in reflector housing, that will limit your output in a projector housing. this can be sanded off though. also, to get the d2r to fit into the d2s socket, you will need to create a notch on the base

d2r bulbs don't fit properly unless you renotch them and scrape the ceramic coating off them.

is the coating see through cause both bulbs look pretty close to the same. also when I put my old bulb into the new housing it fit in just fine, i just spun it until it dropped in then locked it in place. How would I sand the coating off and is it worth just buying some D2S bulbs?

the coating should be dark, the purpose is to block light. and you should not be able to fit the bulb in without creating a new notch. maybe you already have d2s bulbs for some reason? does it actually say D2R on the base of your bulbs?

thanks for all the info. I bought them off a website, all they say on the bottom is Japan. the notches are different then the bulbs (d2s) I got with my projectors, but they do fit right in still. I’m going to have to just buy some d2s bulbs. any recommendations on where I can get some 8K bulbs for a decent price. how are the bulbs off of HIDplace.com?

stick with the OEM brands like Philips or Osram, I recommend stock temps (4300K) but if you want to go higher, I would say go with the Philips Ultinon 6000K at the most. 8000K bulbs are dim look ricey

looking my bulb that I had in my old headlight there are some letters that are engraved, here is how they read. ML-D2C-D4. it has 5 notches on it instead of just the 2 notches like a stock bulb. the bulb is clear, no paint/coating on it at all on the lens. It must be a universal bulb or something

D2C bulbs fit in both D2R and D2S fitments. That's why they fit.

+1 on the Ultinon 6000K. The loss of output on the 8000K will be signifcant and users with them have noted problems in the rain.
