I think you've inspired me to try this on my winter wheels. Couple of questions for you.

-On your initial sand with 250 grit, did you take it down to the primer, or just rough it up enough that the paint / primer would stick? How did you clean them before you started?

-What was the reason for sanding after the clear coat?

-Did you paint the wheels with the tires mounted and just tape them off?

-Did you paint the inside of the wheels at all, or tape those off in some way? Wondering if you got any overspray or how you handled that.

Thanks~!

I just used wheel cleaner to wash the wheels off.. Used a brush for the really grimey parts with baked on brake dust. you could use dishwashing detergent too, it removes oil well.

For initial sanding, basically you want to remove the clear coat, it you sand a bit too much and take off a bit of the paint, its ok.. should look something like this.

Yea i just taped off the tires as seen in pic.

Yes i painted the inside of the wheel, but only with primer, and the base Black coat. you probably also want to paint around the hub area as you will be able to see that with the wheel mounted.

Take your time and dont coat it on too thick on a single pass. If you happen to get overspray or drips, wait 10 mins until the rest of the rim is fairly dry, and take a Q-tip, and carefully press down on the drip.

the wet sand on the clear coat is for imperfections or overspray.

Good luck, and take your time. good prepwork is what is going to make the diffrence.

Your wheels look awesome. Great job!

How many cans of paint (for each type) did it take to do this?
Primer, Black, Graphite, Clear?

You said you let your wheels cure for 3 days. Did you find that to be long enough?

I'm going to do this soon. Any advice to share from your experience?

Agree with TTRANK, black out your handles and grill, and if you can your headlights as well. Nice job on the rims BTW.

(Sorry for the crappy quality pic, took it w my phone, will post better pics after this weekend.)

Man, I so want to paint my coupe 19s but I'm not too sure how a really dark wheel would look on a BS sedan. My 19s are curbed checked but not too bad.
