There's cup kits that use bags, but I didn't know that the bulk of the ones (maybe all? dunno) for the G35 don't use bags.

Still compressed air, just without using the bag as a medium.

cups are an air powered piston, there are no bags involved. if there where, it'd be bags not cups.

 

"cups" and "cup kits" origin is from using bags on top of coils/struts, etc using shorty bags. The idea was the same, to ride on the stopper during normal operation and only use the bags to lift over bumps.
They used little custom fabbed 'cups' to hold the bags because conventional mounting took up too much clearance and the bags would get misalligned.

This caused excellerated wear though because the internal stop was always under pressure and it caused flex/stress on the bag and they always blew out. They could also get misallgned and rub on the cup itself if the suspension had enough play and air settings weren't proper. It was a crappy design.
That idea evolved into the piston setup you're talking about on the G35, that's mainly used. VW and many others still mess around with cheaper bagged cups.




Then there's the other interpretation of the "cup kit", the guys who put these in place of springs on more basic suspension setups like some of the old VW, GM, etc. They are still considered a cup kit, and were around long before the name grew into the piston-on-strut system you're referring to.

Both styles are cup kits that use bags. And bagged cup kits were the beginning of the piston style.

Either way doesn't really matter much, because on the G35 that this forum focusses on, cup kits are primarily Piston style it seems.

 

bag on coil setups where exactly that, bag on coil. cups are cups, i wouldn't call leaf springs coils or vice versa

*also, people making generic bag-in-cup kits has no bearing on the actual origin of Roberuta type cups

 

All interpritation of the phrase, setup, application, etc. As I said earlier, semantics. But there are 'cup kits' that work precisely the same as the piston style but use bags, and that's where piston style came from.

Bag on coil uses the springs as dampers, that's different than the cup setup, as you know. Agreed, not the same thing. The fact is, a piston is a piston, whether it's a flexible bag or a solid style, it's serving the same purpose. And that purpose is the "cup kit" idea. Some use bags still, some don't.

Anyways it really doesn't matter, it's semantics, and the G uses piston style cup kits (as I learnt from you today )

Updates? Not going with 22s I'm gonna try and squeeze 24s on there!

JDM clock has been wired up and tested (thanks to Zack at Rare JDM!). Now I need to get the leds swapped to blue and white. ARC oil cooler should arrive early next week.
