Finally had to do a sponge bath...
Finally had to do a sponge bath...
...for my Coupe!
Now I'm not sure what you all own, but if ya got a Coupe with 18" rims I hope you know by now driving your car thru a normal carwash is rim suicide (if not convinced I have several pics to prove so). However you can (very carefully) take your car thru a "self-wash" because most of those just have outside rails, where if you drive in *very carefully* there should be no damage to your rims.
Anyhoo, I live in the Geneva area, and anytime I drove near one of those self-washes it was a) at least 10 car wait, and b) full of.. pardon me saying...cheap cars? So I said screw it. I'm gonna do what I thought I'd never do.
I gave my car a sponge bath in my unheated garage. After doing it, it wasn't as bad as I thought!! 2 buckets of warm water as an initial bath, a bucket of warm normal soap water, 2-3 buckets of warm rinse water, several clean white towels to dry, and it wasn't that bad!! I was quite cold, and my feet got soaking wet (note to self: waterproof boots next time) but the whole thing took less than 45 mins, not much of a difference if it were summer. (OK, add on another 20 mins for rim and wheel detail!). And oh yeah, so the leftover water doesn't freeze in the garage, either get an old towel or a wet-dry vac to soak up the excess water.
Anyway I thought I'd post this here since most of us MW'ers might understand. I see a few *very* clean Coupes in my area and I wonder... how?! Well now at least I've got a way. (not sure how they do it?!)
Take care all - go Cubbies! (a bit pre-mature but oh well).
Karl
PS - Any coupes in the Geneva/St.Charles/Batavia area?? Lemme know?! I see a few every week!!

Re: Finally had to do a sponge bath...
I've been thinking about doing the same thing. But I want to run a hose from my utility closet to my garage. This way I will have hot water and then use a floor squeegee to push the water out of my garage. Now all I have to do is wait for the wife to leave for a long enough time as I will be sleeping in the garage if she finds out I was running a hose thru our house.
Now I just need to get a heater so I can do a full zanio job.

Don't you guys have anywhere you can go to get a hand wash and not have to worry about destroying your wheels?
After doing a quick search I found <a href="http://yp.yahoo.com/py/ypMap.py?Pyt=Typ&tuid=12673835&ck=1066816874&tab=B 2C&tcat=7843655&city=Geneva&state=IL&uzip=60134&co untry=us&msa=1600&cs=4&ed=4kDPpq1o2TzlrBtkafmK.Ue7 py9aSKs0X8oJENjv0VkP&stat=

Re: Finally had to do a sponge bath...
Yea, there's actually a hand wash place in St. Charles, about 5 mins away from me.
The thing is, the garage they have only holds 2 cars max, and each car takes at least 20 minutes. If you pull up there and there's 2 cars in front of you, that's a 40 min. wait plus your car, so that's an hour to get my car hand washed?? Plus after tip it's $20.
I did take it to the place once, and my car looked great, but no better than it did when I did it myself. I saved myself $20 and 45 minutes by washing it myself in my garage.

Re: Finally had to do a sponge bath...
I miss having my car washed. The parking garage I used to park had a guy who would wash, wax and detail your car while you were at work. That was nice. Drop the keys off in the morning, and pick them up after work and my car would be glowing. Now I always do it myself. I don't trust anyone else.

There are 2 hand car washes in Oak Park and $10 for outside and an extra $5 for inside--both include wheels done. Holds me over until it gets warmer.
