Tinting in NYC

So I think I'm gonna get some tinting done, but I got a couple questions first:

1) Should I just go to the dealer? I remember they told me it's like 300 or 400 bucks? That's kinda steep IMO, but maybe I'm forgetting the number...

2) Is there any disadvantage to going somewhere else? If not, any New Yorkers (especially Queens) who can recommend a good place, and tell me what a good price is?

3) What % do you guys think works well with a Black Obsidian? Like I stated in previous threads, I really don't wanna get ticketed, but I think I'll get the "light sensitivity" pass one day =) How does 50% on the front and 35% on the back sound? Or is 35 and 20 more fitting?

The dealer will get a pro to come in and tint your car. You might as well go to the pro yourself.

I take all my cars to Tom @ the art of tint. He's off the west side highway and he's the one the dealerships in the area call to come tint. He used to work for 212 motoring on the weekends too, but I don't know if he still does. Google up the company name.

Depends on your plates and whether or not you have a PBA card to beat the tint tickets.

I have 20% on black with a black interior and it's complete hotness... but I also have CT plates and a CT license. No tint tickets since NYPD doesn't care.

If you're worried about tickets, don't tint your car. Simple as that. If you're worried but you wanna tint anyway... read on.

If you have a black interior you can get away with lighter tint... 35% probably, although that might just be too light.

If you have a light interior you can probably do darker and it might not look TOO dark.

I wouldn't mix/match since that's just for looks... anything darker than 70% is illegal, so you might as well bite the bullet and get what you want. If they pull you over and bring out the meter, you'll fail even with 50%, so what's the point?

Like Viguera said, any tint you put on is gonna be illegal. So it basically depends on what you're looking for.

Heres what I would suggest:

Do you want privacy in the car? 5% - 15%
Do you want to block out the sunlight? 5% - 30%
Do you just want the darker windows to make the car look better? Any tint, even a light smoke(50%) would enhance the appearance of a black car.

You should also take a look at some samples while youre at the tint shop. It will help alot more than seeing pictures. I went 15% all around with a 5% strip across the front windshield to block out sunlight. I have black interior so it also looks darker. I got a deal on mine through a friend but he said he usually charges around $250 - $280ish for the G35 sedan.

EDIT: you posted while I was typing this. 35% is going to be light especially with that interior. You might want to consider 20% instead.

+1

And I'd say you get what you pay for. If you go to a fly-by-night operation they'll charge you $100-150 for all 4 windows and the rear glass, but they might do a decent job.

A dedicated shop like Tom's or 212 will charge you $250, but you will be satisfied. And if something goes wrong they'll fix it for free.

Either way, I wouldn't take it to the dealership and pay them $400 for it.

I used to have a light "stone-like" interior on my Maxima and went 35% because the car was registered in NY. It looked good, but nowhere near as good as 20% does on my car now.

But it's all up to you... I have 3 cars that I've driven in NY with "obscenely dark" tints and I've never been pulled over. Some people tint their cars lightly and they get pulled over coming out of the shop

Like I said, if you're worried that bad, don't do it. If you don't care or you don't mind paying the ticket(s), go for 20%.

Well, I'm really just goin for the smoked look. Got nothin to do with actual privacy or anything =P. And I've seen those JET BLACK tints (probably like 5%) and think they're a little much actually haha.

I have my boys PBA card but he also gave me a mini shield with it. Thats usually the life saver.
