Here's the SJ Mercury article on this:

http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/16472468.htm

Remember, in ice and rain: drive at a speed safe for the conditions and keep VDC on (but don't rely on it exclusively).

Great piece of advice.

California Vehicle Code section 22350 VC-

22350. No person shall drive a vehicle upon a highway at a speed
greater than is reasonable or prudent having due regard for weather,
visibility, the traffic on, and the surface and width of, the
highway, and in no event at a speed which endangers the safety of
persons or property.

It's been pretty damn cold. I commute on San Pablo Dam Road every day over here in the east bay and about 4 mornings ago it was all iced up after the rain from the previous night. Patches of black ice everywhere, saw a couple spinouts onto the embankments. Everyone was going like 30mph (in a 50 zone), and just when I thought I was clear from the worst parts, I hit some ice right when I started to make a very slow lane change at 25mph. The G lost traction and started to make its way towards the shoulder at a nasty angle. Before I could react for myself the VDC kicked in pretty roughly for about an entire second and put the car back in line. Not the coolest experience, but it's nice knowing that gizmos in the car are working like they should.

This weather sucks by the way...
