Fiber to homes - No way!

Well, I had an AT&T rep knock on my door and basically informed me that we have fiber optics availability in our neighborhood. After, kidnapping him for a few hours, I was convinced that it was something that I had to have. In 2 weeks I will have a independent fiber rolled out to the house, YAY =D. For those of you who are interested, it's called AT&T U-Verse.

They have different packages which include various speeds, fiber router, DVR Set-top box, and some other HD television units that I'm not sure about. No installation fee, no contract, and 30 day money back guarantee, what else can you ask for? IP TV is the future. I work in this industry so I'm glad that we finally have it available to us. =D

Where in NorCal are you located? I would be very interested. What is your pricing package (if you care to share)?

I've been trying to get Verizon's FIOS forever now, but it's not available in SF. Do you have any region specific information available for U-Verse? In the meantime, I'll be Googling away.

Yes, Verizon FIOS for some reason isn't available in the west coast to the best of my knowledge. I also read that Comcast will be coming out with a fiber line as well, in the near future. So, if you're willing to wait, it would definitely be worth checking out.

I'm in the San Jose and the I opted for the U100 package which is 6mb download, and I think 2mb upload connection, comes with 100 channels, router, DVR Set-Top Box, HD equipment for the TV. $74 a month. No contracts, no installation fees, first 30 days free. So, with such enticing offers I couldn't help myself.

I'm lost in your words... yes I'm positive that it is 6mb download. And if you're getting 6mb with cable, you should stick with it. Reason, I'm going with this fiber is because it's a dedicated line to my home, and the speed is always constant. As opposed to cable, but since you're obtaining those speeds you're probably not fighting for bandwidth in your neighborhood anyways. So, again you should stick with your provider. As for me I was using DSL and I was only getting 1.5 1.8Mbps top speed which is good for web browsing and whatnot but since my household loves to streams dramas it really lags the network. Not sure if it's the modem or the lines at the house but I hate having to reboot the modem and router every other day. I've also never really been a big fan of Comcast's customer service.

If Verizon ever does make it's way out to the Bay Area, their speeds go all the way up to 50Mbps download and 15Mbps upload but why would anyone need that unless they are running a few high traffic servers in their house?!?!?!

What do we do in the 3 intervening years?
