Updates (2/27/2008)

Now that HD-DVD format is DEAD, Toshiba Corp. and Sony Corp. said they have agreed formally on a chip-making venture that will start operations next fiscal year.

In line with an accord in October, Toshiba will buy some of Sony's 300-millimeter-wafer production lines in western Japan for about 90 billion yen ($835 million). The companies said the deal will be completed by the end of March, and Toshiba will lease facilities to the venture, which will start operations April 1.

The venture will be 60% held by Toshiba, 20% by Sony and 20% by Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., Sony's game unit. The venture, which will be capitalized at 100 million yen, will make advanced chips used in Sony's PlayStation game consoles as well as in Toshiba's digital consumer goods.

I'm glad blu win. I was an early adopter and was actively rooting for and educating people about bluray curing the format war. I'be got over 100 bd's and counting. Now with all 6 major studios on board, there will be many more movies to choose from. I feel sad for my wallet.

Nice. What games or movies do you plan on getting? I also recommend that you install the folding@home program and run it. It's for a good cause.

I was at Costco over the weekend and came ever so close to picking up a Blu-Ray player for $375. I know it's a big chunk of change, but I was ready and willing to make the purchase until my friend, who works @ Costco, talked me out of it. He said I'm better off either getting a PS3 for $20 more or just waiting till summer/end of year when he expects the price of Blu-Ray players & DVD's to be much more affordable.

Give me your input. What do you guys think?

Rob, the PS3 is still one of the best Blu-ray players you can get. Plus they've just announced support for their Blu-ray Live feature which will let you download extra and updated movie content for each movie that supports that.

Sony has confirmed that the next software update for the PlayStation 3 will add support for interactive Blu-ray Live features.

The update is scheduled for release in late March and will enable PS3 owners to experience interactive features such as downloadable video content, ring-tones and games.

Software update v. 2.20 will enable photo and music playlists on PS3 to be copied to PlayStation Portable systems, among other new features.

"With Blu-ray established as the high-definition optical disc standard, more consumers are ready to jump in and take advantage of everything the format offers," said Scott A. Steinberg, vice president of product marketing at Sony Computer Entertainment America.

Blu-ray Live requires an internet connection and at least 1GB of local storage.
I think your best bet is to wait a little longer and see what Sony does with future PS3 consoles. The prices will come down a little more over the summer, I'm sure. Plus Sony will always update the PS3 firmware making it one of the best HD players out there.

If I'm not mistaken, PS3 don't upconvert DVD's.

Is your TV 1080 "P"? I would've go with PS3 if you want to play blue-ray DVD's now.

That's a good point. They always said they would sooner or later but I don't know if they enabled that feature.
