Venice and Culver City both have some dodgy areas. Basically the closer to the ocean/more closer to Santa Monica the better off you are, though Culver City has become more gentrified in recent years.
Marina Del Rey is a neighborhood in LA just south of Venice - it's generally a pretty nice area.

^ what he said. when i travel back down to socal, i stay in santa monica or in marina del rey. my advice is to priceline a 3 or 4 star hotel in their santa monica - marina del rey submarket. you can generally get a good deal that way.
if cost is a concern, stay at one of the hotels near LAX. just make sure its on the west side of the 405 and on/near Century Blvd.

^ Ah thanks for the heads up guys. I am definitely willing to pay extra for the peace of mind. I wonder where all the Texas guys are staying, maybe we can all stay at one place and have an "out-of-towner" party Hahah.
EDIT: I'm gonna try to get a hold of whoever is organizing the Texas trip and see what they're doing. Hopefully g35papa will chime in here and let us know maybe what the plan is with hotels. Personally I would like to stick together; I think it'll benefit all of us =D
