Has this happened to someone here?

My car's gas guage is not reading correctly. After I fill up my tank to full, it reads full and then drops to a quarter to full.

When it's half full, and I start the engine, it goes up and drops to near empty even though I have nearly 5-6 gallons. When I drive about 50 miles and there's about 3-5 gallons left, it reads empty and the gas can icon appears and doesn't disappear.

It must be a faulty or broken gas guage or what could it be? Please recommend or advise... Thanks

I agree with the faulty gauge assessment. Are you still under warranty? If so, schedule an appointment and take that bad boy in

05 G35 coupe. No more warranty. At 82k now. Started around 75k. Thought it was bad gas, maybe temperature shifts, hard driving and swerving and sloshing gas in the tank and a combination of many things. Thought the problem would go away but hasn't stopped. Today had $20 of gas about 4 gallons and it still read empty. What the hell? I wonder if gas is leaving through my tailpipe while driving or possibly going somewhere else that I can't see?

you need to pull your backseat cushion out, remove both the assemblies that dip into the tank, and clean the metal parts on them with a q-tip. same thing has happened to many of us and its a common and easy fix.

yea it happened to my car a lot too. i just dont even look at the gauge anymore i just look at the milage that my car has and be sure to fill up before 350 that's how i do it! haha. i got my gauge thing "altered" and cleaned but now it's always reading past the "FULL" thing so i'm not sure if it's accurate, i was stuck on the freeway wit no gas once trying to read the gauge, it said 1/4 left. =.= but i was empty.

yup same here on my 03 sedan. gauge is always about 1/4 tank below what it should be. call it an "early warning" system, haha!

Mine goes from a 1/4 tank to empty and then you drive 20 miles and it goes back up again....very wierd but as I am the only one driving the car I know how to read the gauge.

definitely wickety wack for my Infiniti. I find myself filling up 3 times a week because I keep seeing it's close to "empty" and don't want to risk it because I drive far and a lot of miles daily.

I've driven Toyota, Lexus, BMW, Mercedes. Never happened except on my Tacoma prerunner as it approached 104K.
