Star watching spots ?

My friends and I want to go star watching, we tried going to the vista point up in saratoga but couldn't see a thing because of the fog . I don't know much bout the four seasons coming from the equator so the fog gonna be there as long as its cold or ?
Anyone know of any great alternative places(+- 30 miles from Cupertino)?
Appreciate any input.

Might want to try heading up to Mt. Hamilton. Take the Alum Rock Road exit off of 680, head east on Alum Rock. Turn right on Mt. Hamilton Road. Follow that for as long as you like. Very twisty so hopefully no one gets carsick. Nice city view along the way too. Once you get over the first few hills it cuts down on the cities light pollution and you can get a pretty clear view of the stars. Listening to the coyotes howling up and down the valleys is a trip too.

You could also try taking Calaveras Blvd (237) up into the hills east of Milpitas

Both places shouldn't have any fog and have decent views being as close to the city as they are.

Is there a place to stop along the mentioned roads? like a vista point or something?
I don't think any road was twistier than the one i took (skyline blvd) and I could only see 2.5m ahead because of the fog. Not to mention the deers.
BTW, how do people hit deers? The deers just hop out of a sudden or are they just on the road(unexpected) ? I came from a place with no deers .

when i was living in WA, a deer jumped into a 4 lane street and i had to break/pull a 180 to avoid it. deer will enter the street unexpectedly so if you only have 2.5m visibility, go VERY slowly. hitting a deer sucks and it will really f up ur car

get a palm pilot and download Planetarium:

http://www.aho.ch/pilotplanets/

it'll show the the sky map and tell you where the main stars and all planets are. could be quite enlightening.

There are plenty of turnouts where you can stop along both roads. Depending on the time of night and the area, you should see very few cars. Especially on the roads up behind Milpitas.
