Rough start followed by loud tapping/knocking sound.

Hello all!
I started up my 04 sedan yesterday and it ran extremely rough. Near stall, lots of shaking, etc., and there was a loud knocking sound. I've never had this happen before. The engine has always ran/started smooth.
After a few seconds, things smoothed out for the most part. It still idles a little rough and the knocking sound is still there, although not as loud. If I rev it to about 2500 its pretty much drowned out by the normal engine noise, but still there. Also, I noticed the exhaust is emitting little visible puffs of smoke. There are no warning lights on the dash.
I'm thinking valve or camshaft timing problem? I'm going to try to record it and post an mp3 if I can later.
In the mean time, does anyone know a good Nissan pro in the Redmond/Kirkland area? I'm trying to avoid taking it to the dealer$.
I'd really appreciate it! Thank you.

Yes, the oil was the first thing I checked and it was fine, just due for a change.
A friend of mine who owns a performance shop in SoCal suggested it could be a bent valve or the variable cam malfunctioning. After a couple days, the sound went away, so I never got a definitive diagnosis, but my friend is pretty convinced it was the cam. The good news is, if he's right, it won't cause any further damage.

I went to Intec first because they were the only place to get an Osiris tune, ended up having a good experience, and have since went on to get a lot more work done there.
In the process I've learned alot about the shops history, drama, and mistakes.. (if you stop by you may notice that none of the employees that worked there even 3 years ago are with the shop anymore) I do believe that they're trying to do good by everyone, correct some mistakes that were made in the past, and move forward. I'm not going to hate on anyone because of stuff that was done in the past, what matters to me is how they're acting right now, if they F__'d up my ride and tried to work me over you better believe I'd be the first guy on here calling them out. So I guess we'll see, but so far I, and several of my friends with G35's have had good experiences with Intec. Not to mention the fact that there isn't really anyone else in the area with extensive VQ experience.
