Calvin.....Nice camera, and excellent photos...
Depending on your camera...if its shutter priority or aperature priority......Different applications require different techniques.
As far as buying another lense, two things to think about
a) how will you be using the lense (closeups, Zoom, low light, tripod etc)
b) What aperature you will need? the wider the range the higher the expense to purchase, but the lense will be easier to use an more versatile for multi applications.
An all around good lense would be a variable focus, say 30-100mm or maybe more of a protrait lense 40-80mm. These give you alot of versatility, and saves you the hassel of changing out lenses all the time....
Aperature is probably more important for quality photos. The larger the Aperature,(say 1.2 or 1.8) the bigger the front lense, and of course an increase in expense...
The 1.2 is ideal for soft portrait types of photography, since your depth of field is limited to the focal subject. in other words, everything in front of the focused object and everthing behind will be out of focus, or soft.
The higher the aperature, the opposite....more focus in front and behind, all the way to infinity....
A quality lense is the key to sharp crisp pictures, and it usually is free of aberations and other maladies related with cheaper quality lenses...
Canon makes a quality product, so I don't think you could go wrong with their line of lenses.....other manufacturers will probably be cheaper, but you may sacrifice a little picture quality in the process.
P.S. Good quality lense filters are a must as well, they help to calibrate UV and other reflective light that sometimes give the picture a harsh or textured look.
I still have an old Contax 35 mm camera, and it uses Carl Zeiss lenses....
The lenses I purchased so many years ago have tripled in price today....So you never lose your investment in a quality set up.
Good luck
Dennis

GR8TG35,
great info. thanks for your input.
now...i just how to figure out what all that means! but i will definately take as much of that as i can and consider it when purchasing my first lense.
is there a particular lense that is better for automotive photography? i don't know how well this would work out, but is it possible to recommend a lense for me by looking at these photos? being new to the photography world, i don't know much...but i'm sure i have some sort of pattern, or "style," in my pictures that a more experienced photographer could see/pick up and use to recommend a lense for me.
thanks again,
cal

Pics look great! They are much cleaner and more vibrant than on your old camera already
Were you using the auto setting or playing with stuff manually?
I've been looking into HDR photos a lot lately. Since you have a dslr now you should too and you can get some CRAZY pictures Google HDR photo how to and you'll see what I mean!
