Topspeed Pro-1 Short Shifter
For only $75 I had to give this a try. Installed in my '03 coupe yesterday. I figured a review was in order since I did not see much info on this site about this shifter. Here are the Pros and Cons
Pros
Short precise shifts, feels better than stock
Price
Cons
This is going to be a large list.
Instructions suck. First off, they tell you to simply twist off the shift **** using a towel and channel locks. NO! You cannot just force the ball off this way, you have to have a vice grip or other set of pliers on the shaft under the boot to hold it while you twist the **** off. Failure to do so can twist your linkage. Once I started twisting and found it would not come off I visited this site and found the correct way to do it. In the process, I scraped my stock ****, and while it is an excuse to buy a new one I'm still pissed.
The pictures in the instructions are horrible, and explanations are slim to nill. Another step involves filing .125 of an inch off the left side of the hole going down to the linkage but fails to tell you why you are doing this.
Tells you to fill the shifter pocket with included grease, but no grease was included.
Forgets to mention reinstalling the spring into the shift pocket. Huh, I knew it was in there but thanks for not reminding me.
The pin that acts as a solid washer that the linkage bolt passes through does not fit with the plastic washers that come with it. This pin will not fit into the hole with the plastic washers in place. The stock washers will not fit as the hole is too small on the new shifter. I installed the shifter with just this washer in there, and since it is smaller than the hole there is play. This results in the mushy feel of the shifter while it is in gear. I can wiggle the shifter left and right while it is in gear. This makes a BAD situation because you can't find your gears easily. I am going to probably get the hole milled out to stock size so I can use the stock plastic washers. Either way: very bad design.
Reverse does not work well for me right now. A simple push down on the ball and over on the shifter does not get me into reverse. Instead I keep hitting 6th, reverse is practically unobtainable. Yes I have the reverse pin facing the driver side, but it is not clearenced right or something. Again, better instructions may lead to why I am having this issue. I can get it into reverse, after about 5 trys.
All in all, you get what you pay for. My impression of the shifter is that the short throws are great, but the quality of the product and supplied instructions are worthless.
And getting the damn linkage rubber boot back on is impossible. I think I had my test pipes installed quicker than this shifter.
