Every evening at dusk, go to the park off Congress on the Colorado River/Town Lake adjacent to the Austin American Statesman parking lot. Look up at the Congess Ave. bridge, and watch around a million Mexican free tail bats take flight. ( http://www.io.com/house/batstory.html )
Eat until you sweat at the Salt Lick BBQ ( http://www.saltlickbbq.com/ ). A nice 30 minute scenic drive South of Austin. Go on a Sunday afternoon. That is the only time they offer a full slab of baby back ribs ($17.95) and a 36 ounce prime rib for ($24). You can do the all you can eat family style parade of BBQ everyday of the week. You can BYOB a cooler of beer if you like
In Austin, music, music, music. Spend a night dancing at The Broken Spoke ( http://www.brokenspokeaustintx.com/ ).
To the North, visit Inner Space Cavern ( http://www.innerspace.com/ ) in Georgetown.
Go to Gruene, TX (it is actually part of New Braunfels) ( http://www.touringtexas.com/gruene/ ) about 40 minutes South of Austin. The wife can shop, or you can take the whole family tubing down the Guadelupe River ( http://www.rockinr.com/ ) for the day. Catch a concert at Gruene Hall ( http://www.gruenehall.com/ ) in the evening.
Also to the South you will find Wimberley, TX. (http://www.wimberley.org/ ) Shopping, arts and good food.
Take a day, and visit Fredericksburg ( http://www.fredericksburg-texas.com/ ) and Luckenbach (http://www.luckenbachtexas.com/ ) to the West.
San Antonio is a little over 90 minutes South of Austin. You have The Alamo, River Walk, and Sea World.
That should keep you busy for a few weeks.

your kind of in the heart of texas so anything you want is no more than an hour to 2 hours away. you have shopping at prime outlets in round rock and in san marcos(30 min south) Six Flags and Sea world in San Antonio (1 hour south) or Six Flags over Texas in Dallas(2 1/2hours north) not to mention the family funcenters and things like that around austin itself.....i think i just sold myself on moving there!!!!
If your into outdoor stuff, there is lots of parks. Most popular is Zilker. It has Barton Springs pool, 8 mile hike/bike trail, soccer fields, disc golf course, and a little train! Lots of mountain bike trails around town. I can think of 6 disc golf courses between Austin and Round Rock. Geez I can go on and on.
