Usually it happens when before the car warms up. After driving around for a bit, it seems to be ok. I'm too afraid to try and duplicate the grinding, so i've been granny shifting a lot lately. hahaha. But if I shift really quickly (especially downshifting from 6th to 5th), it'll grind.

Infiniti of Tustin, CA was about to replace the trans on my car in December 2005 for my 9 month old 2005 G35 Coupe.. then it got totaled on new years day -__-

it was due to syncros in 4th gear not matching up causing me to grind gears upon shifting unless i double clutch (rev match in N with the clutch engaged) or get that thing really nice and hot..

thats 100% my fault for driving the thing like a nut - power shifting.. and holding my hand on the shift ***.. when you do that it adds more weight on to the shifter.. if anyone know what the gears in a trans look like you'll know how easy it is to mess up the syncros.. even hitting the shifter with a hammer can fck things up.. syncros are brass or copper (forgot.. its some type of soft metal) that goes between the gears you're shifting through.. they're only mili-meters wide

For a dealer to warranty it they MUST be able to duplicate the problem.. either YOU show the service writer, manager, or shop foreman and tech or THEY must be able to identify it through a simple test drive. SOME dealers will charge you a 1HOUR or 1.5HOUR diagnostic fee for testing it.. IF the problem is warrantyable then WARRANTY WILL PAY FOR YOUR DIAGNOSTIC FEE! careful there are *** holes out there that'll try to get their customer pay rate up and charge you for the diagnostic fee.. now this only works if you have extended warranty

FOR THOSE OF YOU in WARRANTY! there should be 0 charge! if the writer trys to do that request for another writer.. nothing will happen as service writers get paid by commision and will be GLAD to help you out.. if its a small dealer go straight to the manager.. BY LAW infiniti will cover your concern to the full amount UNLESS you are found at fault and UNLESS the service writer is certified to diagnose your car HE CANNOT MAKE YOU PAY FOR DIAGNOSTICS IF YOU ARE COVERED BY INFINITI FACTORY WARRANTY!

Reasons why service writers will charge you
1. There are 3 general types of tickets = Internal (dealer pays), Warranty (infiniti pays), Customer Pay (YOU pay)
- Customer pays what pays writers the most becuase they can jack up their hourly rate.. IE pay the tech 2hours for working on the car but charge you 4hours of labor.. their effective labor rate goes up and that usually scores them a bonus
- Warranty ticket will cause INFINITI to give you a survey.. This survey DIRECTLY effects your Service Writers PAY as well as keeping them on the good side with their service managers.. USE THIS TO GET WHAT YOU WANT! take care of him and theyll take care of you
- Internal meaning the dealer fcked something up or owe you something or help you pay for a EXPENSIVE repair anything dealer pays for is considered internal this does not effect their pay in anyway. if they sell they sell of not then oh well.. example is if the tech changes your oil and forgets to put oil in

Very good info Eric...

It's only the matter of being able to duplicate the issue with service advisor, tech or manager on site. Which, I believe is the most difficult process of all.

Yeah, my G was already in the shop for sucking water into the engine with the CAI. So after they had fixed that problem, I asked to go ahead and test drive the car. So I guess I lucked out and did not have the extra inspection fee.

Later,

Ray

does this problem apply only to the manual transmission coupes?
cuz my '03 when in tiptronic mode and it downshifts from 2nd to 1st automatically when I'm pulling up to a red light or a stop, jerks like I just slammed on the brakes.... whats that about ? it does that about half the time, sometimes it's smooth.. I'm not sure if there is warranty or not, bought the car used last month it has 60,000 kilometeres on it..

Care to elaborate?
I took it to Tustin per Heri's recommendation, Alex is a easy guy to work with and now I can only hope they'll fix my issue.

Explain what some of you mean by "grind". I believe some of you are not really grinding your gears, but hearing a loud noise when disengaging the clutch (clutch in) which is probably the throw-out bearing

As far as I know, a gear grind makes the hairs in the back of your head stand up. Gear grinds have only happened to me when I clutch-out without the gear being properly in place (shifter usually half way).

I use to believe I had gear grinds, but noticed its nowhere near a gear grind after actually grinding my gears be accident.

The only issue I have had is a loud noice when disengaging (clutching in) the clutch which sounds like rubbing two metal plates against each other. I call it a "growl" rather than a grind.

Also, as far as the idle, I understand that it is normal to hear some chattering, correct? It goes away when I clutch in, and returns immediately after I release the clutch.

my definition of grind - clutch in, shift gears (for me, specifically going from 5th gear to 6th gear). As the shifter enters the position for 6th gear, you get this resistance and jolt coming from your shifter along with a grinding sound. Kinda what you said about the shifter being "half way" and clutching out, but in my situation, the clutch is fully pressed in and grinding happens as the gear shift is taking place.

My situation is exactly same as Yume. Sometimes it's bad that it would shook me off the shifter.
