DC Headers ... DIY install a cake!

I finally got a chance to set some time aside this Monday to perform the DC Sports headers. The polished stainless steel version I have looked immaculate. It's a pitty you won't be able to see them readily once in place. The individual runners are very close to being equal length and merges with smooth transitions and welds.

All in all, a very easy installation. In fact it was a cake using only one 14mm open-end wrench for the entire process. Time for the install was 2 hours flat. A total walk in the park. I highly recommend people to do this yourself!!!

DO IT PEOPLE ... it's sooooooo worth it! *grin*

NOT!!!

Holy #)$%*^ @$&%!!! Did the header install sucked salty nuggets! OMG! I would gladly pay $360 for a reputable shop to perform the work. It took me 16hrs ... granted a lot of big breaks in between during the period. Oh and I was joking about needing only 1 open ended wrench, if you haven't figured it out yet.

Thank God Eldridge (Eldy) was around to spare a hand (literally). Poor kid thought it might be fun to come by and watch the installation ... I put him to work immediately ... 16 hours later ... I bet he's kicking him self in the nutz for showing up. LMAO! Thanks Eldy! ... could still be installing at this point if it weren't for you. I hope that lunch I bought is enough to salvage our friendship

But as they said, No pain no gain. Initial impression of the headers is very positive. Right about on par and very possibly exceeding those of my Kinetix resonated test pipes'. The test pipes net me approximately 6-8hp/10ft-lbs across the board (plot here) and that is very significant in practice. I did remove the test pipes with the stock cats back in place to better gauge the performance of these header w.o. additional influence from the test pipes as well as how much additional noise they make. My usually pesimistic butt-dyno says it made at least as much difference as the test-pipes and quite possibly more. There's a nice mini surge at around 3500rpm. We will see shortly after I make yet another Dyno measurement next week. I will also head back to the drag strip tonight to see how these fair compare to my test-pipe runs. It'll at least clue us in as to how much power they make ... for now.

Noise level (w. the stock cats back on) did not increase significantly ... a major plus. I think the tone of the exhaust note did chanage slightly, but I can't seem to remember how it sounded since installing the test pipes a couple of weeks ago :/

... so, Steve (Areno) when are you going to install these youself? The ball's in your court now. Do it, Do it, Dooo it! HAHA!

Count me out on the DIY's, took me 4 hours to install a set of frigging splash guards and now one of them is peeling.

Yeah, just drop off your car at my place on sunday and I'll have it installed and ready to go in two, maybe three days... depends on how long it takes to unbolt your turbo kit... haha..

Here are some pics...

... and a video of what the headers sound like.

The beginning of the video is Clint's car with the stock manifolds but without the rest of the exhaust.

I've passed the torch on to Eldy ... so seek him for help

We think the white stuff is bird dropping

BTW ... the results from the track tonight confirms my initial impression of the headers. I was able re-establish yet another personal best of 14.683 @ 95.242 (vs. 14.685 @ 95.620), while running consistently in the 14.7 ranges (LACR time). It is probably safe to bet these headers are making at least as much power as the test pipes (removed at this time). I still believe it feels stronger than with the test pipes below 5000rpm. Above 5000, the stock cats are now a huge burden, making for a slightly less top end (also observed by the lower trap speed). Again, we'll find out next week when I hit the dyno again. The killer combo will be the headers with test-pipes.

Re: DC Headers ... DIY install a cake!

I'm fairly confident it will pass smog so long there's some kind of cats aft of the headers. Headers alone should not affect emission much.

Yup ... was running the resonated test-pipes It's quite tolerable during cruise because I have a fairly quiet exhaust, but quite aggressive still when WOT. Although I have them removed at this time, in the interest of better gauging of the header gains by itself, I'm very tempted to throw them back in. I may entertain the high-flow cat route once again.

Re: DC Headers ... DIY install a cake!

Congrats on those headers Clint. Sounded pretty good with the combination of the stock cats. Good thing too about them is that they won't affect emmissions much since they are the shorty headers. Depending on your dyno and further research I might have to pick mysefl up a pair of the DC's. Even though I installed everything on my car myself so far, I would just leave the install of the headers up to a good shop.
