So aside from a helmet is anything else needed for this? I think I may be down! Time to start shopping for a helmet!

Wow, I had no idea. When I went to the track I took a friend's motorcycle helmet. Who would have thought that a motorcycle helmet costs less than an automotive helmet. I assumed it would have been the other way around.

Are the tracks picky about what type of helmet you have? Can it be motorcycle helmet automotive helmet? Does it really matter?

Yes it does matter, and there are specs that are required. The most important piece of equipment you wear is the "brain bucket"; not the place to go "cheapie". If you don't want to spend the money for it that is fine, just borrow the best one you can get your hands on!!!!!

Here is a link to Snell with FAQ's on helmets and safety, testing, and differences between motorcycle, karting and auto helmets specs that may be helpful to you:

The tracks I've been to require that the helmet have a Snell95 rating or better. 95 being the year that the helmet was certified. Most new helmets should be atleast Snell00. They have these ratings for both motorcycle helmets and automotive helmets. But I would suggest that you check to make sure that whatever helmet you get meets the track requirements.

And I fully agree with Eagle1, this is one place that you should probably not save a few bucks on. But I don't know about spending $500 on a helmet. Anyone have any idea what would happen if the airbag went off?

Sorry if this has gotten a little off topic.

If anyone's going to be picky it would be the event organizer rather than the track. For this event, we are going through Speed Ventures (www.speedventures.net) and they are not particularly picky and will accept M-rated helmets. Looks like the S2Ki guys found a nice deal at Super Autobac for M-rated Helmets at $99. (check page 5 here).

The choice is yours to go with whichever helmet. I chose to protect my egg with the best from Sparco.

Looks like the M rated helmet gives you more visibility which is nice, but doesn't go through flammability testing. Thanks for all the responses guys.
