The schlepp to LS and to Sears Point are tough, and from San Diego even more so. But worth it. The tracks are just beautiful and the elevation changes and turns very challenging. The walls at Infineon can be nerve wracking when you are driving iron that you own. But the challenge is outstanding.

Ed, I can't wait untill we are done with your car. I also can't wait to see your, and even better, the expressions on the faces of those Porsche guys when you blow them away.

No disagreement with that happy sentiment, Scott.
I will start a separate thread on that rebuild adventure this Sunday. We should do some progress pics along the way with the rebuild stages and can post them for the enthusiasts on a couple of sites. I may talk to a couple of friends in the biz and get a sponsorship or two now that the task is beyond serious.

Do you guys run with street tires or dedicated R compounds? I want to go to track again but the last time I tracked my car, 1/2" of my tire melted off. I wasn't even pushing the car to the limits.

Maybe I'll come and watch. I can't afford the tires for a full day tracking the G.

Suk (Steven),
Personally ... I'd recommend street compound tires for the novice people. R-compounds also chunk off (ie. RA-1s), you just don't realize and they are not cheap either. R-compounds tend to mask many newbies mistakes on the track ... most end up developing bad dricing habits that are hard to shake later on.

Scottl,
Are you going to LS for sure? Those cars of yours look pretty amazing.

I agree with Clint. Run a typical high performance or max performance summer compound street tire the first few times. At least until you get a good feel for the car and its limits in handling. If you still want to go tracking and are looking for more speed, upgrading to a DOT-R compound will probably buy you around 5 seconds per lap. It is amazing. But they don't "talk" to you and give as much warning as to when they are going to let go, so you need to work up to the limits a bit more carefully. Then you can, if you want, go to an all out race slick. That will buy you yet another 5 seconds of lap time reduction. But they hold like glue...right up to the point where they let go...so you really need to know the car and the tire...not something to just jump into and hammer the throttle with.
What difference is the time reduction worth? Not much really. Unless you are working at the limits, you can have more fun than a barrel of monkeys on street tires. And you can get cheaper ones to chew up on the track, cheaper than your pilot sports or continentals anyway.

Hey!

Is it too late to sign up for this? And if not, do I have to buy a helmet or can I rent one at the track? And I should probably put my 18's on for the day huh. I'll go ahead and register today if I still can.

Later,

Ray

You bet Ray. Go for it! You might want to scroll up some and read the directions how to register w. some discount. Also, try to get in on that lodging deal I mentioned. Hopefully there are still rooms left ... if not, feel free to crash in my room (w. Avo).

Yes, stocker 18s the way to go! You will need your own helmet. There will be no rentals available. At worse ... I do have an extra one you can borrow.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Go online and search for super autobacs or call them (Garden Grove) and just have it shipped to you. The helmet I got was about $118 with tax it's Snell DOT appv. Get the xlarge the large is still to small I think.
