Getting a ticket for modified exhaust is one of the most common tickets. The reason being, any cop can issue this citation regardless of how loud your exhaust really is. If you decide to fight it, it's solely up to you to prove to the judge that your exhaust is under 95 db. They passed a law that allows Smog Ref stations to do the db test. So just find one and have your exhaust tested. They will certify it, and that should hold up in court. Some judges will NOT accept manufacturer's certifications! Some judges will send you to the Smog Ref regardless.

The best way to avoid these silly tickets is to get an aftermarket exhaust that is not of the fart can design. So that means, a muffler that looks stock, like the Fuji, Borla, Tanabe setups. Exhausts like Injen, HKS, Greddy EVO2 all use the canister design which is easily recognized as aftermarket.

The Ford Mustang community was upset that the new Mustang moved the mufflers to behind the rear axle. So now when you swap to aftermarket exhausts, you can tell. The older Mustang design hid the mufflers before the rear axle. So that way, you can't see if you've got an aftermarket unit on. The domestic community understood the concept of stealth mods. That's why they seem to get popped less.

Motorcycle Limits


27202. For the purposes of Section 27200, the following noise limits shall apply to any motorcycle, other than a motor-driven cycle, manufactured:

(1) After 1969, and before 1973 88 dbA
(2) After 1972, and before 1975 86 dbA
(3) After 1974, and before 1986 83 dbA
(4) After 1985 80 dbA

 

Hey MEECHIN you know the 92db rule man, didn't you learn anything from the reack man. Man you just can't win lately with the HKS man.

 

Based on that ... all Harleys on the streets should be BUSTED! They ain't any single one of them that puts out less than 95dB!!!

 

Sorry to hear about it Dru. When I got tagged for this a few years back (pre G35 days) it was non-correctable and I paid about $150. For what it's worth, being non-correctable, you don't have to get it written off. But it still stabs the wallet.

As for the Harleys... think of it this way, most motorcycle swine own them. If only we could get the rest of them to drive modified Japanese cars, we'd be set...

 

ur gonna have to wait till the court send you the bill....last time i got pulled over in my old Maxima with GReddy Evolution system, i got billed $130 something...but I actually brought a CA certificate from GReddy(saying that it's indeed 50 state legal) and printed out an article from SEMA website which pertained information regarding the exhaust sytems in CA, (which pretty much says that unless the exhaust system was modified soley to increase noise AND the decible reading is under 93(i think), it's a no-no for the po-po to cite you for it) and the judge dismissed the ticket. This was in IRVINE....the cop who wrote me the ticket even said after the hearing that as long as I have those papers with me all the time, he wasn't going to give me another ticket for it. anyhow....here's my conversation with the po-po that pulled me over...


me: uh.....what's going on officer?
po: i pulled you over because I noticed that you have an illegal exhaust system on your car
me: oh, no~! it's actually not illegal. I have purchased a 50 state legal system.
po: oh, but that's not including CA.
me: (counting in my heads as I'm going back to my high school civics class going...damn...are there 51 states now?) uhhhh......
po: here's your ticket and have a good night.

Yea technically you're correct. But we have what is called "Letter of the Law" and "Spirit of the Law". Letter of the law means that legally we could pull over each and every Harley and fine them with noise pollution. Spirit of the law means we use our own disgretion in regards to motorcycle. It really depends on the mood the officer is in. Unfortunately many officers are biased when it comes to Harleys. We kinda except that fact that it's a way of life.
