Ok my radar detector has the laser capability. It goes off sometimes when I drive past Miramar (military base, jets) Other than that it has never indicated a laser speed trap ever...until today.

It was a Sheriff's speedtrap, set up next to one of those lighted road signs that radar you and tell you how fast you are going. I get the usual chirp sound from the detector indicating K band radar (the sign) but then as I get closer the laser warning went off and there was a patrol car parked right there. So is Cali going laser? Anyone heard anything????

I have the Escort8500x50 and works amazing. It does have laser/pop/ and all the usual radar bands.
One thing about laser though you must likely won't get a warning, unless your radar catches when they clocked the car in front of you.
Laser can't be detected like x/K/Ka bands, but it can be shifted/jam if you get a laser shifter or jammer (they not legal in most states) for your radar detector (optional).
Laser only lets you know if your caught or not, with no warning most of the times!

Our local PD and Tennessee Highway Patrol have had laser for several years now. I got nabbed by it back in '04. The officer said that at night they look for cars with the HID headlights because it typically means a performance car and they clock them. My Passport Solo II picked it up but bascially just let me know I was busted. I spent an hour with the officer learning about the laser and clocking other cars. Remember that unlike radar, laser can only be used when the officer's car is still. I did find that the laser has a screen that shows speed, direction, and distance away the vehicle is from the gun. The officer showed me that they can be sitting in their car and the laser gun can be pointed at the driver door's outside rearveiw mirror and they can track the speed of any car that they can see in that mirror. I tried it and picked out a car coming up from behind that I saw in the rear-view mirror, put the red-dot on it & pulled the trigger.......the speed read out on the screen!!! As the officer said, "it is like shooting fish in a barrel!!!"

Once laser hits you you are f'd. All the radar detectors that have laser warnings just let you know you're f'd before the cop puts his lights on.

That's pretty sneaky!

They know that people with radar detectors are used to the annoying, long beeps detecting the radar speed unit, so they hide out right next to it. The unsuspecting G35 driver zooms by because he's used to detecting the speed sign. Very sneaky... That should be entrapment...

I dont know what kind of detector I have, I bought it at Costco (~$200?) a couple years ago. It works excellent and has paid for itself a couple times for sure.

I googled and searched and couldn't find any news or info. I think the detector possibly gives the laser warning sound when it detects multiple bands, thats the only thing I can think of if it was not laser. Need to dig and find that manual to know for sure.

What people said is right, you will detect the laser but its too late. Even in a crowd the laser is a small, low power beam so its unlikely to detect scatter or deflected light from other cars. If all the cops get laser then radar detectors will be obsolete. I sure hope not, those bastards!

If I was a cop and knowing what I know about laser guns, there will be nothing to stop you from being caught by me. The laser shifters out there work well but only partially, and most the time the cops will pull you over even if your laser shifter blocked their gun from reading your speed.

and then what? Are they going to give me a ticket by guessing how fast I was going? that will hold up well in court.....NOT! They can pull me over all they want......I have a clean license, registration, and insurance.
