Mufflers removed (sound clip)
Mufflers removed (sound clip)
I unbolted the mufflers on the G35 tonight. It took about 10 minutes for both of them and sounds damn good. I can't tell if there is a little bit of rasp audible to other people outside or not though while driving in the car, so I'm not sure if I'll be replacing them w/ a pure straight pipes, or if I'll have a short resonator welded into the pipe.

It's hard to get an accurate representation w/ an online video... but the car is actually still very quiet.
At idle it's barely noticeable outside the car and completely unnoticeable inside the car with windows up. Under 3k rpm, its very unnoticeable, sounds like a coupe maybe? (never been in one). Above 3k rpm it has some great sound to it, and under decel in gear at 5k rpm there is no droning and virtually no noise in the cabin.
If you're curious, go try it. All you need is 10 minutes and a 12mm socket. It's all within reach w/o jacking the car up too.

Big performance difference?
Big performance difference?
It's hard to judge any performance increase. I'd say there's virtually no difference (hp increase or tq loss). It's mostly a sound only change. But given that full cat back exhausts don't add much power, it's a nice cheap alternative to get some sound into your G without changing anything under the cabin that might affect droning or noise.
Obviously it shouldn't be left like this full time, but there are multiple options to install straight pipes and tips or bullet mufflers/resonators and OEM looking tips.
so it's just hanging there? how close is the bracket to the tip? if it's far, i think youre putting too much stress towards the back. sounds nice, close to a coupe, but it's kind...cheap

If you mount a muffler or muffler delete pipe, then that would need to use the oem hanger locations.
And to clarify, it shouldn't be left like this. A pipe should be fabricated with or without a muffler to route the gas out the existing cut outs in the bumper.

No offense, I have an 07 g35x, and I don't want my car to sound like that. I am going to put an intake and exhaust but a lot more subtle sounding. It has a bit of a V8ish growl when the revs are winding down, but that is way too much of a Fast and furious tuner sound, reminds me of all the punk high school with old civics and nothing but and after market muffler. I just think it takes away all the luxury aspects of the car, and most importantly the stelthyness. this car smokes most lightly to medium moded imports from stock. It is great pulling up to a light next to some punk in an tuner who has no idea what you got, and then destory him in an instant. I love taking off to embrass them, then let off so they can push their car and pass me, and then overtake them again while their still running flatout, but that is another story.
I mean if you want a sports machine then great, but I could never picture taking a girl to dinner or talk business with someone when the car sounds like that without feeling like a lame. Especially driving it everyday. A bit over the top. This car is like James Bond, a total gentlemen, and can kick lots of *** too. You take away the gentlemen qualities, then you're just some *** kicker. Lol. I am not some old business man either, I am 23.

Yea, I just assumed people would want it to look stock-ish vs. having the empty cut outs.

It just passed the g/f test w/o her even noticing. The only time she really admitted knowing something was different was at WOT 4,000-7,600 in 2nd.
With the windows up cruising at 3,000rpm you can't tell anything is different at all.
I would bet that a full catback will be louder than this... at least inside the cabin.
It only takes a few minutes. If you're thinking about buying a $1,000 exhaust for 5-8hp, consider this option first. Straight pipes and tips could be added for ~$150, and bullet mufflers and tips could be done for ~$250.
hmm.... i like it
i think i may just have to try it this weekend, weather permitting
I dont think it sounds very tunerish at all, kind has a nice gurgle to it, reminds me of a gen 1 coupe or fx35.
Plus i dont talk business in the car, nor do i plan on it, and the gf is easy going
