I wouldn't change the hard drive in the car because that's not a regular drive. It's a 2.5" drive that is designed specifically for automotive use. It has wider temperature range, better shock and vibration, and humidity spec. Standard 2.5" drives that you can buy off the shelves will not last very long. Also, be aware that the drive is ~ 20G to 30G where only 9.3G is available for music, the rest of the capacity is used for navigation. I would not mess with the hard drive.

Thining about this like a computer, if thats possible, isn't this just a comp with a single hard drive, and some external inputs. It has an operating system.

If its possible to get into the OS, and if there is a way to hook up another harddrive, couldn't that hard drives path be linked through the music hard drive, just like a folder in the existing drive, but this folder goes to the extra hard drive?

 

I believe it's possible to connect the hard drive to a PC and download/upload files. However, the drive's file system has to be recognized by the PC, which in most cases uses a Windows based FAT16, FAT32, or NTFS file system. I have not clue if the Infiniti system uses any proprietary file system - I would speculate so. If it does, then it's very difficult to talk to the drive through PC.
By the way, the drive uses an IDE or PATA (parallel ATA) connection so newer systems that has SATA (serial ATA) may not be able to connect to it.

 

The idea from what I would like to see is not replace the HDD but use another system to get data to the HDD. Ripping CDs one at a time gets a little old and cumbersome really.

 

Without knowing the file system the HD uses, it's impossible to say whether what you are asking is possible. More than likely, this HD uses a proprietery file system that would be unrecognizable to a PC. If that truly is the case, than I don't see a way that you would be able to transfer audio files to the HD.

 

Anyone can confirm a post I saw elsewhere, that the dealer was able to transfer data from 1 HD to the one in the car?

 

When I first got my car, I had taken the glove box apart to rewire some stuff, and happened to look up and saw the hard drive right next to the passenger air bag. It's very easy to get to. I could take some pictures but I'm on the road so won't be able to until next weekend.
