Toggle switch for nav/ipod??

If I were to hook up an aftermarket NAV system like the Garmin GVN and run it through the A/V inputs, is there a toggle or trip switch I could use to allow the ipod to play music and let the nav override only when a voice prompt is forthcoming??

Thanks in advance.

I don't think it's doable... I mean, it's probably doable but I'm too lazy to try to figure it out...

I suppose you could use some crazy setup tapping the radio mute, and detecting audio from the garmin unit or something to mute/switch the audio.

I have an 07 and nav, so I never thought about it... but I suppose you would have to do the audio switching before you get to the input jacks, since both the garmin AND the ipod are going through the av inputs, no?

How does your setup look now? I'm sure someone can come up with a way of doing it, it's just not one of those problems that people spend a lot of time thinking about

It can surely be done with a small dose of ingenuity. go grab a cheap A/V Switcher, cannibalize it into a new backing plate that you make. Ususally, they will have 4 inputs, 1 output. I say, open it up, cut out 2 of them, solder and heatshrink the open connections to be dead-ends. Cut out of thin aluminum, or MDF, a front plate, and fold up a small Aluminum box. Even a Wallswitch box, with brackets cut off, from Home depot will due. Mount the plate with 2 buttons derived from the switcher. Last step, cover the unit with some carpeting matching the inside of your console, adjust to fit snugly, and viola. You have your switchbox.

Sorry for the explanation being possibly confusing. a little intoxicated, and thinking on the fly.

One of the Tom Tom models has an iPod interface, so you can plug-in your iPod to the Tom Tom, and the Tom Tom to your G35. The Tom Tom will (I believe) mute the iPod automatically when it plays voice prompts. The Tom Tom also shows song information on its screen.

I saw that, but the TomTom has its own screen, which defeats the purpose of trying to use the g's existing sceen.

Not trying to quiet the radio, just the ipod through the same a/v jacks. With an ipod, I never have reasin to listen to the radio anymore.

I have a feeling you already know this....and have a plan to get around it...but just in case.

The AV video input is disabled when the car is in motion, so displaying a 3rd party nav on the screen is not possible.....without mods.

Another question..... How do you plan on controlling the 3rd party unit? I was under the impression that the non-nav G's don't have touch screens.

i can't be the only one wondering why he didn't just elect to get the factory nav package. considering the gear you get with it...it just made sense. no matter, though.

this entire post is a tad...weird. it's like someone asking for directions to the house next door, and insisting on going there by way of alaska.

Didn't want the premium package, because i installed an unbelieveable stereo system myself. Without the premium package, I coudn't have the NAV, but know that a workaround with an aftermarket black box is feasable. I use my ipod for all of my music, so the hard drive (and its limited abitlity due to not accepting MP3's) was unattractive and my ipod holds way more than a flash card. So in analyzing the pros and cons, installing my own awesome stereo (CDT comps up front, a boston acoustics G5 sub in the rear deck, powered by an Elicpse 125x4 @ 4ohm amp) for under $600 plus hard wiring an aftermaket nav for $400, gets me everything I wanted, the way I wanted it, without things I didn't feel I needed. I put the extra money I saved towards my home theater system.

yes, there are several good reasons why people don't like the nav package, like me as well, i don't like the price for what i get for the nav package, inability to do anything while the car is in motion, updating nav etc etc

and i'm sure he knows this, (need to play with couple wires to have the bypass), the black box garmin doesn't use touch screen, it uses a remote, and it uses our existing screen

maybe the solution to hear garmin and ipod is as simple/lame as getting a two 2 to 1 connectors, so in theory you listen to both, but just turn up the garmin unit really really loud, haha

i have the gvn in my car. I tried to think of an auto switching idea but came up with nothing. I just use the screen with no sound and ipod music

The option i was thinking of was using a small 50w x 2 amp and a pair of 3.5 speakers in the panels below the dashboard, it wouldnt mute the music but you'd get the garmin vocal directions.

Hi ON_6MT

First of all thanks for your old post a while ago regarding two very special little wires. I did it in about an hour and it works great.
I have been searching today on Ebay (and others) for the GVN 52/53. The lowest I can find it for is about $430 (someplace in AZ). Does that seem reasonable or do you think I should be patient and wait? I thought I saw you got your GVN 52 for $300ish.
Thanks again. Owe you a beer
Paul, Waterloo Ont
