XM satellite radio reception fix
XM satellite radio reception fix
For those who subscribe to Sirius XM satellite radio service, I was experiencing XM satellite radio dropouts (loss of signal). This occurred near SOME cell towers, mainly those where TMobile was the cell tower owner. TMobile provisioned the AWS-1 cell frequencies which are so close to the XM Sat radio service frequencies that the antenna used on the Infiniti G35/G37 models will receive the AWS-1 frequencies, overwhelming the XM sat signal. (Further technical details are left research by the reader).
I finally came across a Youtube video by Miami_g37, where he details his fix for the XM/TMobile interference issue.(
).
i can now verify Miami_g37 has found a solution, however, the parts he specifies are not correct for the G35 XM sat radio receiver.
In his video, Miami_g37 specs a "FAKRA K to SMB adapter (which is FDE color) to use with the replacement XM sat antenna. My G35XS (built midyear 08) uses a FAKRA H (Pink) connector (not compatible with FAKRA K).
Listed below are the two parts (XM antenna and FAKRA H to SMB connector) I ordered on Amazon that will work with the G35 XM sat receiver: Total cost about $30.
I installed these parts, drove through the areas where I experienced XM sat radio dropouts and in each areas I had NO XM sat channel dropouts.
Miami_g37 placed his antenna on the rear package tray with a metal plate for a "ground plane", I mounted my antenna on the trunk lid; the truck lid will provide a better ground plane for the antenna but it is visible. Your choice on aesthetics vs signal reception.

I don't use my satellite radio much anymore but when I did, there were a few places that it would cut out 100% every time I drove through the 'spot'. Odd thing is, it only went out when I drove through in one direction (the way to work) but not on the way home. I did some research and found the same links to it being related to T-Mobile although I have no way to be absolutely certain.
I recently resubscribed to XM after a few years off ($5/mo for 24 months) and it is much worse than before, but glad to know it might be an easy fix. I'll take out the trunk panel and see if I find the connector. Per the video looks like he only replaced a single part?
