*Safety Alert* Is everyone using OEM Shank style lugnuts on their wheels?
SubscribeI just mounted my new M-sport 19s and noticed that the OEM G35x 17" wheels and lugnuts are shank-style, while the M-sport 19" wheels are conical style.
The G35 shank-style lugnuts have a conical seat on them (not sure why, its kind of a mix) so I went ahead and installed them and they seemed to seat OK. I'm a little nervous tho. What is everybody else doing?
(for those not familiar with shank vs conical)
Shank (with conical seat at the bottom):

Standard Conical style (typically used on domestic and aftermarket wheels)

Definitely change to conical seat nuts.
the others are unsafe on the M wheels.
OR any of the new style G wheels that use the shank style lug nuts

Interesting, thanks for the advice, I happen to have a spare set off my old Titan so I'll go swap now. Do the stock M35 Sports come with conical style lugs? I wonder why they are different than the Gs....
The Titan nuts will work fine.
Yeah, they all used to be conical.
The G changed with the 2nd gen.

+1 ^^^ What Ian said.
The 1st gen sedans had conical, the second gen have shank style with washer.

Hey I was actually wondering about this.
Thanks for the info. The M45 rims I got came with conical lugz.
I guess I just have to drop by the dealer and purchase a set of conical wheel locks.

Consider yourself VERY lucky, and change them NOW!Originally Posted by CalsonicVQ
I've been using my G lugnuts with the M rims for 20-25k miles w/no problems.
If you look at how the shank style seats on a conical wheel;
you have a VERY small contact patch.
That small contact area is subjected to MUCH higher loads (psi) because of that.
This will lead to stress fractures on the wheel & ultimately to failure.
If you've run 20-25K, I would inspect your wheels very carefuly.
They may be damaged & you don't know it.

will the regular ray lugs fits the m45 wheels, not the extended or 2-piece lugs
I'm gonna install my m45 wheels next week and i'll be using lugs from the g37 journey wheels....so i'll be using stock lugs at least for a month

I wonder how many others w/M45 sport rims are using the stock G lugnuts. Pls chime in!

this may be obvious, but if you want lugs OEM shank or conical, ebay has them cheap. I remember Toyota wanted ~ $2 per lug, you'll get them for a fraction on ebay.
^whs...
Lug nuts are dirt cheap.
Use the ones designed for the wheel.

This is why I posted it and what worried me...nobody seemed to discuss it, so either everybody knows without saying (doubt it, given the "conical end" of the 2nd gen shank style nuts) or a lot of people are using the wrong nuts as I almost did. Scary!Originally Posted by CalsonicVQ

Seriously, I think it is pretty obvious that the lug nuts should not be used when you would try to install them. I know it certainly was very obvious to me when I tried some 1st gen wheels on my 2nd gen.Originally Posted by Justin311
