Has anyone else got recurring problems with their front rotors/brakes?

Hi Everyone:

I love my '07 G35x, and haven't had too many issues, but I have one issue that has recurred so often that it's starting to concern me. When I brake hard from a speed higher than 50mph, there is a shudder/vibration that comes through on the steering wheel. I've taken the car in for this now 3 times. Twice they resurfaced the rotors, and once they replaced the rotors but said my rear brake pads were work (showed me, and they were worn, so I had to pay a fortune to replace them).

Anyway, within 2 to 3 months of them fixing the front rotor issue, it happens again - even after the new rotor. I'm taking it in on Monday, and they have promised to again replace the front rotors under warranty. Is this a common problem with the current G? Anyone else have a lot of front brake issues?

Also, how long should brake pads last? I had to replace my rears at 19k miles. Sounds a little low to me, and while I do occasionally drive agressively, I would say that this would account for no more than 20% of my driving.

Thanks a lot

The rotors on our cars suck, plain and simple.
I had them turned once and replaced once (under warranty) as the dealer recognizes the fact that the rotors are crapping our prematurely.
I'm not wasting my time with OEM again.
Next brake job, I'll be replacing my rotors with aftermarket.

Yes, I have EXACTLY the same problem on my 2008 G35 sedan with 28K. I tried to clean pads/rotors by taking the pads out. The slit on one pad that supposed to remove residue/dust was completely clogged I cleaned it as well as other pads/rotors using brake cleaning fluid and put everything together. It's been fine for a few days but recently the problem returned again. I'm due for a 30K service, you mentioned they had resurfaced (and later replaced) rotors under warranty. How many miles do you have on your car?

I have 23k miles on my car, and the problems started around 9k miles. So between 9k miles and 23k miles, I've had to take my car in for this 3 or 4 times now. Very annoying.

Aeson, what would you recommend as an aftermarket replacement for our rotors, and how much would it cost? I hear rotors are pretty expensive. On the other hand, my stealership charged me $380 for new brake pads for the rear wheels... Crazy.

Cheers

had same problem with my oem and changed them with R1 concpet drilled/slotted rotors(front) and ebc custom rear with cermaic pads, and have been so happy and no shuddering or vibration while braking with over 20k on them they stop better than new while my oem was annoying me after 10k.

If you don't mind me asking, how much does a setup like that cost?

Thanks a lot

Perhaps its the pads? I replaced mine without turning the rotors and voila, no more shudder. Then again, the pads were already running thin.

Mine were turned at around 25K and replaced at about 35K

Kool, can you provide me with details on where you got your rotors, or what brand you chose?
You're good luck with them is enough to get me interested.

Just get the G37s Akebono BBK and voila! All your shudder problems are gone...plus they look great lol

Seriously though, I had that problem last year and it kept coming back after visits to the dealer.
Luckily my tech supervisor at the dealer is a great guy and he said he'll get the techs to make sure it goes away.
No idea what they did but it hasn't happened in a year now... (knock on wood)

I came very close to doing just that, but I have to deal with the lovely New England weather. I have a set of 17" Blizzaks that would never clear the calipers, so this was put on hold for now.
Maybe someday down the road, I'll find another winter setup that clears, but for now, I'm sticking with what I have.

Took the car in today and told the service manager how unhappy I am with this recurring problem. I asked him to replace the rotors and pads with the OEM's for the 09's if that is possible. He said he would look into it and do that if it's possible. I also suggested that if nothing else is possible, perhaps they should upgrade my rotors to something else. We'll see what happens. I'm expecting to get the car back either tomorrow afternoon or the day after that. In the mean time, I have a G37x loaner, so I can't complain. I like the G37x a lot. It's definitely smoother than the G35x, particularly at highway speeds. It feels like the plastic in general is of a slightly higher quality than that in the '07 G35x, although that may just be because this car is almost new.

Performance wise, I feel an improvement in acceleration off the line in the G37, but not much of a difference if it's not off the line, and actually feel more hesitation in down shifts if I'm already in motion, making it feel a little slower when you hit the gas hard if you're not doing so off the line. Still, it is very nice to be able to drive 80mph with 2200rpm or so compared to 3200rpm in the G35x. Overall though, I would not trade my '07 for the G37 between the two until it was time to sell my car because it was too old (by which time I imagine there will be a completely different, new G with a hybrid 2.0 liter 4 cylinder turbo or something of that type :-(. )

Also, they had the G37 convertible on the showroom floor. Wow, that is a stunningly beautiful car. I wish I could afford one of those instead of my '07 G35x.

Thanks for all your responses.

Cheers

Sorry for replying so late guys but i'v been very busy with adding an used 05 fx35 AWD with sport/nav/touring package with only 33k to my lineup! So ive been lurking around the Fx side for a while now, i know i should be more loyal to the G

Anyways firstly for the rear i ordered the EBC dimple/slotted rotors and they confirmed that it would fit the 07+ SPORTS G sedan but i was skeptical and surely enough they were wrong as they were for non-sports, so after about a month of complaining they came back and said they don't make rear rotors for sports and will custom make them for me which they did and they fit fine, but now when i am to replace them id go with r1concept same as my fronts.

Now for the front i went with the R1Concepts Premium Rotors which are rated to handle over 500lbs more braking capacity and cool 50% better with much reduced chance of warping due to heat as compared to the stock rotors as per their words.

I went with the cross drilled and slotted rotors per special order and was quoted around $460 just for front rotors, but when i got them they were still in testing mode and had not sold one for the sports and wanted a installation confirmation so i got the front rotors with front and rear ceramic pads for a great price of around just the price of the front rotors but dont expect to get anywhere near that deal now

Link to rotors, and as for the ceramic pads you will have to call them to get the right ones as online they just have the semi metallic listed online

Hope this helps and if anyone needs any more help let me know, btw i too have heard a lot of drilled rotors cracking but I have had no such issue so far with over 20k on them and no signs of it either, but still i take no responsibility if something like that does happen remember this is just my experience and not a guarantee that these rotors are good.

G/L guys.

I don't think so. Otherwise they wouldn't explicitly specify 2WD I would imagine, but I don't know for sure. I think though that because the wheel sizes are a little different, the rotor sizes may also be. Try this one instead:
