Tire Debacle
Tire Debacle
Got new Bridgestone 960AS tires put on today. However, once I got home I notice that they put on 225/45 up front, but the OEM size is 225/50 (I've got an 07 Sport). Does anyone know if this is a big deal? I'd like to stick with the OEM sizes (especially considering that's what I thought I was getting). They also dented a rim, which caused the paint to crack. Is it too much to ask that the right sizes be put on without damaging stuff?
Thanks for any input.

Definitely take it back and make them fix it. You'll have to prove that the dent wasn't there though, which is why I always walk around the car with the tech before handing it over.
Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. I had come to terms with the dent, but can't ignore that the wrong size was put on, even if it is a small difference. Good idea to walk around with the tech. I guess I was hoping that a certain amount of care would be taken--I was wrong.
Every time my car has been worked on at the dealer there has been damage of some sort. Once was a scuffed bumper which I was able to buff out. Another was a scratch and dent in the console trim piece next to the unlock of the AT park. Then still another when they came and picked it up by flatbed. When I went to pick it up both of the front mud guards were severely damaged from what looked like the tie down straps. Almost would have to be blind not to notice them. I left that day without the car.
I know that the difference in overall tire diameter is fairly small. However, I do not pretend to know how that small difference impacts the electronics (e.g., ABS, VDC, etc.) in emergency situations. In my view, I’d rather use the OEM sizes to which everything was presumably designed to. Overly cautious, perhaps, but I’m the one in the car.
It is over 3% difference which is not recommended. http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCal...?action=submit

That’s a great website--thanks for the link. I am having the OEM size put on as soon as the shop is able to get the correct OEM size (about a week). I will also note the damage that occurred when putting on the wrong size and inform them of my expectations that no additional damage occur. I am doubtful that anything will be done to fix the previous damage to the rim.
No matter where a person takes his car,, you pretty much have to take the tech, or service writer by the hand,,, ( like a little kid
) and show em there is no damage now, and ya want it like that when there done.. You didn't say where this happend, but putting on the wrong size?? thats almost unforgivable!!! who knows.....new guy doing the mounting.... in a hurry... dings a rim, either mounting or by spin balancing.... gl....

I found more gouges and scratches along the inner lip of the rims between the tire and the rim. This is just frustrating--they were pristine prior to this experience.
It is possible to change tires on the sport rims without damaging the rims, correct? Two of the four appear to be okay, so I would assume so. Does anyone know the technicalities of a low-profile tire change that are used to prevent this type of damage?
Thanks.

I went back to the tire shop today to have the correct tires put on the front two rims. As I dropped off the car, I noted to the service advisor that the wheels were damaged when the first, wrong size set was installed, and calmly asked that they be a bit more careful to not further damage the front rims. I was assured that wouldn't be a problem and he even made a note on my paperwork.
Well, two hours later, the new front tires are on and my rims are ten times worse. Previously the shop had put a dent and three chip/cracks in two of the four rims. Now they have added several more cracks and a long (5-6 inches) scrape around the lip of the rim that causes the paint to peak and crack. As you can imagine, I am very displeased. When I confronted the shop about the damage I was told that the low profile tires are tough to install. I'll be calling the manager on Monday to discuss how to correct the situation.
Does anyone know how expensive rim repairs is? Can I go to a body shop for estimates or do I need to find a dedicated facility?
Obviously there are much bigger problems and concerns in life, but this situation just continues to be frustrating. Again, I just wanted new tires without having my pristine rims marred. If you can't install tires without damaging the rims, you shouldn't be installing tires.
Thanks.

thats really bad!!! especially after you told the guy first!!! Its to bad you had to do this on a sunday also.... prolly not there best people there on a sunday... allthough can't recall what day they did the first damage to your wheels,, I would not stand for this,,, even though you are right about " bigger concerns and probs" this uncompetent place needs to pay up!!!
I'm with Titan, I woulda gone apesh1t. It is NOT too much to expect to get service without damage nor to ask that they make it 100% right if they do cause damage. Be calm but firm and be specific about what you want. Don't accept any vague promises that they'll 'do their best to fix it up'. If you want them refinished or replaced, let them know that is your expectation. (the apesh1t thing does not get good results, LOL)
Good luck, let us know how it goes.

A quick update. Turns out the tire mounting machine was missing some type of offset tab that causes the machine to not scrape along the rim as the rim is rotated. The tire shop has stepped up and offered to repair the damage without question. They presented several options, including obtaining remanufactured wheels, refurbishing my wheels, and purchasing new OEM wheels.
I did not want to go with the remanufactured wheels, because I assume some of those come from Gs that were involved in accidents. As for the new OEM wheels, I don't think the tire shop was anxious to spend $2k on new wheels. So, my rims are going to be refurbished by LKQ Corp. (http://www.lkqcorp.com/home/home.asp). I don't know much about the company (but for what I could learn on the website), however this was the only place the shop wanted to work with and without some reasonable reason not to, I agreed. I am trying to be reasonable about this.
As of now, I will be dropping my car off Monday morning at which point they will remove the rims, unmount the tires, send the rims out for 3-4 days, put my car on jack stands in the parking lot, and I will drive off in a rental car. I should be back in my car by the end of the week.
I have debated jacking the car up in my garage and just bringing in the wheels, to prevent any additional damage from the tire shop jacking up the car and putting it on jack stands (there is a lot of underbelly plastic just waiting to be damaged). I am not too excited to spend even more of my time taking off my wheels now, putting them back on later, and maybe having to drive back to the tire show to have the tire pressure sensors reprogrammed. Also, if I do leave my car at the shop, I'll do a walk around with the manager to confirm that there are no dents or scratches on my car, and I expect that it will remain that way.
Anyone have any thoughts? This has been a very time consuming set of new tires.
