Front Brakes Warping (Again)!?!?

Hi Guys,

I have a 07 G35x sedan with 28k miles on it. At around 13-15k the brake rotors started warpping and every time I steped on the brake the car would vibrate and the steering wheel would shake. At that time I took the car to the dealer and complained about this issue. They took care of it buy doing a front brake job for free since I was still under warranty.

The same problem just resurfaced not too long ago and now since I'm out of my warranty period (ended in March) what can I do? I'm just barely out of my warranty period and I have about 13k miles on the rotors and pads they replaced. Are there problems with the materials used for the brake components because they seem to be wearing prematurely?!!?!? I wouldn't expect this from a luxury car like Infiniti.

Erik

It may not be warping, see this:

I had the same thing happen as you. Brakes done under warranty once, judder came back after another 10k or so. To help get rid of the uneven deposits, I went to the middle of nowhere one night and rebed my brakes. I did 10 stops from 60-10 in quick succession. It has helped some, brakes feel better than before but still a slight judder.

Ditch the oe rotors and pads and go aftermarket! I personally am very happy with my Centric premium rotors and Hawk Ceramic pads from The Tirerack.

There is a TSB for brake judder. It could be covered outside of warranty because it's a known defect. Look up the TSB on infinitihelp.com. I had the work done on mine due to bad judder when braking at high speed. The key change made was the addition of a backing plate that ensure the rotors don't warp under high heat conditions.

Curious, what kind of "backing plate"? On the pads? How does that affect the rotors. I have a 2005 and I still have the original rotors. They have lasted better than those damn stoptech rotors did. I tried them and when they cracked, I went back to my original rotors after a slight machining.

The easiest way to warp a rotor is to make a "panic" stop and keep the pressure on the brakes while the rotors are still hot. The second best way is hitting water when they are hot.

So I had the front brake job done due to the TSB back when this issue first popped up, but after looking at the brakes last night i noticed I don't have the new updated backing plate. I'm going to go back to my dealer and insist they do what ever it takes to get this problem resolved and make sure I get the updated backing plate.

Embarrassed to say but I have no idea. I brought the TSB with me and told them it described the problem I had. When I picked it up they said they executed the fix as described in the TSB. Never did any verification beyond that. I did read the TSB beforehand but wasn't able to understand what the backing plate was. I looked up backing plates on Wikipedia but saw the same thing, something about pads.

Maybe someone who's more knowledgable can speak to what's in the TSB.

tsb's are suppose to be performed even after warranty is out right?
also after reading that tsb on break judder, it seems that they could possiable have to replace rotors and pads for a new set free of charge under the tsb?

I dealt with warped rotors every 7-10K miles and the dealer turned or replaced them several times. About 20K ago, I had the Brake Judder TSB applied which has them turn or replace the rotors, change the pads and install front rotor splash shields. (the rears already have shields)
Since the TSB, and without changing any driving habits, my brakes have been flawless since.

Guys once you have to pay out of your own pockets then DONT get OEM rotors search and their are many better 1PC aftermarket rotors out there that will last you a LONG time and are affordable

The backing plate are like splash shields if I'm not mistaken. The rears have them already and on my old 1995, they had them too. They are kind of a pain to install, so if you do bring your car in for the TSB, definitely make sure your dealer installs the backing plate. You can easily tell by looking at the rotor if it's behind there or not.

I went back to OEM rotors because I couldn't find anything that worked or lasted like OEM.
