08 G35 Sedan - How to make the exhaust growl??
I currently have an 06 G35 Sedan and previously had an 03 G35 Coupe. In both, I installed a JWT Popcharger and the Z intake tube. The Popcharger made a slight difference in exhaust sound, but the Z intake tube made a huge difference in exhaust sound at wide open throttle. I am picking up my new 08 G35 Sedan tomorrow and the exhaust note is not near as throaty as what I have become accustom to. I know that you cannot put on the Z intake tube on an 08 sedan. So I was curious what the best aftermarket mod is out there to make the exhaust growl. I've heard the Stillen exhaust clip on YouTube and it sounds good, but I don't want to drop $1,500 between the new exhaust and installation. What about just an aftermarket intake like the Stillen Hi-Flow Long Tube intake? For those who have it, will I get that deep throaty exhaust sound? Just don't want to drop $500 on it and it be a minimal difference in exhaust sound.
Would love to hear your thoughts/opinions.
Thanks!
P.S. I know all about intakes - no real performance increase, just difference in exhaust sound - not looking for performance increase (although I'd certainly take it) - just want that exhuast growl at wide open throttle like I had on my previous G's.

C'mon guys - no comments?? I know that there have been a bunch of threads about intakes and exhaust systems, but I really haven't seen one that answers my question. Just looking for some input. If I have overlooked a thread that addresses my question, please provide me with the link.
Thanks in advance!

Ive been doing the same kind of search for the past month. I know exactly what your talking about. I too feel the same about the g35's sedan exhaust note. It could be better. Especially since your coming from the coupe version... boy did I ever find the exhaust note of that car intoxicating! i was always jealous of that sound.
But anyways, yes, z tube will not work. From what I have read about the stillen intake tubes, you will only make minimal gain in sound. You will begin hearing it past 3,000-4000 rpm. It will certainly sound better than the stock setup but coming from a coupe.. I dont think its going to be enough for ya.
I really think that you will have to go with the stillen catback system if you want that exhaust note that your looking for. Also, I have been reading some threads about the possibility of screwing up your MAF sensor with the oil from the K&N Filter used on the stillen intakes and also, Ive read things about.. more dirt not being filtered properly... I personally dont want to risk screwing something up in my car because of this. Also since im planning on buying my car back after the lease.
Thus, I have decided, if I was going to make a change to get that sound im looking for, Im going with the stillen catback exhaust. I know its double the price.. but think of it this way, either pay half and get "half" the sound your looking for, or just spend a lil more dough right now and be totally happy with your setup. From all the threads I have read, everyone who has changed their catback to the stillen's have been quite happy.
Im hoping.. *crosses fingers* that I will do mine this summer.
Good luck with what you decide with!

I've been looking for the exact same thing. I had the 2005 FX for the last 3 years and it had that exact coupe sound that your talking about (except a tad bit more v8ish) and I miss it more then anything.
I've concluded that the stillen intake just doesn't do enough justice for the price.
I'm waiting on the Injen CAI intake to come out to make a better conclusion on whether or not I'll purchase that. After I get some sort of intake (more then likely Injen) I'm going to get magnaflow mufflers and have someone custom weld an H pipe replacing the current Y piping to give me the performance and better sound that I want. - sound is more important since the performance of the car is incredible already-
If this doesn't do it then I'm going to just replace the entire exhaust system.

The engine is a big air pump
I was always taught that breathing improvements that do not have a method for the air to get out are almost wasted.
Increased power in a naturally aspired engine (no supercharger or turbocharging) is always minimal. However, there are benefits to be had, improved low end torque and better upper end engine response with the mods you are discussing.
IMHO many of the "cat back" systems seem to be almost pointless without the high flow cats. In other words, a "full back" system will yeild better performance, lighter weight, and the deeper exhaust note. Lets not forget, they do cost more. The intake improvements may compliment the system with better breathing and that means better response at high RPM's.
While it is true that K&N filters soaked in oil, will do harm to the MAF, I would think that there are other filters that do not need the oil.
So think about what it is you really want, do you want to be heard from the next block, or do you want a car that might just give the wise guy in the next lane something to think about?

If you don't want to spend all that money on an exhaust, you can do what a few of the people on the board did, including myself.. Get two magnaflow mufflers and replace the stock ones. It sounds pretty nice and it's not expensive. You can also get the Fujita intake for about 250. I'm actually selling mine for 200 shipped if you want it =)
