Is the clunking you are referring to bad sign in near future? I feel this in the shifter sometimes when I shift from second to third. But I usually dismiss it as improper shifting. I notice it when I shift fast so the clutch may not be fully depressed? I know i am doubting myself but i have another manual car and i never feel it in any type of clunking when shifting fast or slow.

Just posting an update to our saga. After we got our G35 back after the 2nd transmission change, the noise was once again gone and the transmission feel was excellent (clutch is another story). In place of the input shaft noise however was an extreme vibration in 4th gear, making it nearly unusable.

We have since put about 3k miles on the 2nd new transmission, and the input shaft noise is back along with the significant vibration/rumble (so loud it makes the interior plastic rattle like crazy) in 4th gear. With all this in mind, we sent Infiniti notice that we were requesting a buy back under the lemon law. Infiniti sent us back a two options, either have a engineer come out and inspect and try to repair the car while giving us a loner, or contact the BBB to initiate arbitration proceedings.

We decided that we wanted to give Infiniti the chance to make this right for us, so we contacted them to setup a date to have the car fully inspected. We should have the date by Friday or Monday at the latest.

And the story continues.......

wow i really feel for you, at this point i would hope that they just fix it for good this time, cause with all tyhe stories about buy backs id reckon you would want to avoid it unless you really have to do it. so give them this ONE LAST chance

Intendedaccel,

Any update yet? I'm suing Nissan N America for a different issue under lemon law but I think with your problem your case is stronger than mine. So far they've been ignoring my lawyer.

Regarding this transmission my shifter vibrates (idle and driving, neutral and in gear) since day 1 and the sales person sat me in a G37 that does the same thing so I accepted it. I've had no grind or noise so far but occasionally the stick pops out of 6th gear by it self with the lightest bump by my had without depressing clutch. had 6sp Max for years and never experience the issues like the G. It really scores low refinement points.

Update time

Well Infiniti as promised brought in their regional engineer to inspect the car. We were given a loner during the process. In the inspection they determined that the new vibration noise was due to a bad transmission yet again, and changed it, yet again.

This brings our transmission count to 4 total in 20k miles. Obviously we are NOT happy with this course of action, as clearly changing the transmission only seesm to correct the issue for about 4-5k miles before it starts again. I confirmed today by talking to the dealer that the part had not been revised in any way and that although they had high hopes that it was fixed for good, they could not promise that it was since nothing had been done different with the other 3 transmissions.

We are still trying to reach back out to our contact at Infiniti to vent our frustrations with not listening to our concerns before simply changing the transmission again. We are quickly giving up on Infiniti doing the right thing, and thinking we may have to invoke legal action at this point.

when push comes to shove there r 3 options, buy back, trade in or settle for compensation. The 1st 2 get you out of the car which is the best choice but unless you argue strongly in the very beginning, chances are they will push or compensation. Hopefully you can compromise and work out a trade in deal. But check with your state's lemon law statues and get a good lemon law lawyer. There will be no attorney fees out of your pocket. Make sure you have work order/service reports from every service trip to prove how many times it's been in the shop and total number of days the car is in for service. Sometimes service managers and advisers will pull a fast one by not giving you the report or combining multiple service trips onto the same report. I think you have a good case. but with this economy they don't wanna give any freebies so you will have to fight them strongly.

lemon laws are typically 3 strikes. same problem 3 times in a reasonable period of time and you can lemon law the car. if that's the case in your state, then that car needs to go back

New update:

Picked up the car from the dealer last night. It turns out that they also replaced the drive shaft this time due to a sticking U-joint. Dealer also performed the repair on the door seals (for the 3rd time as well).

The new transmission feels vastly different than the 3 before it. 5th and 6th is way closer to the centerline of the car now. Feels like you are hitting 3rd when you go to 5th. My girlfriend noticed this immediately as well. Makes me think they may have tried a revised design this time.

I was unable to get in touch with Infiniti yesterday, but will continue to try today.

More to come......

Final update for those who have been interested in our story.

The 4th transmission is the worst of the 4 we have had. Unlike the first 3, this one has some moderate shifting issues. 5th and 6th is way more central than the old transmissions were, and are difficult to engage. On top of this, this transmission is exhibiting the clutch out at idle noise, along with the vibration in 4th gear at 3500 rpm as well. Interestingly, the 4th gear vibration is no longer a steady vibration as the 3rd transmission had, but now pulses on and off.

With that said, somebody else is going to have to take this and run with it to figure out this mystery. Infiniti has offered (and we have accepted) to repurchase the vehicle under the lemon laws of our state. The car will be returned within the next couple weeks, and they are giving us back the full amount as determined by the lemon laws of our state. It should be noted that Infiniti corporate has been easy to work with through this process (although hard to get in touch with at times).

I wish all of you who are experiencing similar issues good luck. After extensive test drives over the last couple weekends, it appears that our next vehicle with be a new 2009 Saab 9-3 sedan.

Wow, this is perhaps the first time i have seen anyone on thos forum praise infiniti corp for doing the right thing as usually they are seen to be unhelpful and unwilling to bargin for their mistakes, but i guess in your case they had no other way as there wer probably losing more money replacing a new tranny every 2-3months for you, im glad it worked out for you, so whats your nex car gonna be??? im guess it wont be a G35 6MT for sure though unfortunate that you got stuck with a lemon...
