Transmission "wobbly" at 1500 rpms

Hey all. I've had my G for a little over a month now and am experiencing something odd.

Whenever I drive at a consistent 1500 rpms (around 35mph) on my suburban backroads - aside from being frustrated I can't go faster - I feel an odd chugging or wobbling from the transmission.

I've been able to duplicate it often and on many different road sources. It's only when I give it gas. It feels like I'm going over a mildly bumpy road or a subtle version of what the brakes feel like when the rotors are going bad but it's not during braking or coasting - only when I give it gas and keep it in that range.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

J

it may be gear hunting I think at that speed your car is right at a point between 2nd and 3rd gear. That shift point will actually move depending you driving style. Try driving for it in different conditions such as highways, back roads, etc. to let your tranny "learn".

That said, if you feel uncomfortable with it, do not hesitate to take it to the dealer, especially when you can duplicate it over and over.

Is this only happening in D mode?
Does it stop if you pop it into M and stay in third or forth gear?

Hmm, I'm not sure it's the 'hunting' thing. It could be but it's so minor it really doesn't feel like hunting. It feels more like slipping and catching but on a very, very toned down feel. It's not harsh or stuttery it just feels like I'm driving over a bumpy road. Subtle but definitely there.
I will try M and see what happens.

Thanks for the ideas so far - much appreciated.

Anyone else notice this or am I all alone?

Jay

You're not alone. My car does this well. It's an issue when the TQ converter is locked up.

You'll know the converter is locked if you let off the gas and the rpms hold at 1500 (they don't drop to idle).

I have this problem too. If I'm in 5th gear, converter locked up, and I give it mild gas, the car "chuggs" like it can't decide whether or not to unlock the converter and kinda hesitates. The "wobbly" issue goes away when you give it slightly more gas and the car downshifts or unlocks the converter.

It doesn't happen all the time for me, maybe once a week or slighly more. This means I'll have a snowballs chance duplicating it if I go to the dealership. IMO, it's programming issue with the computer.

I have an 07 G35S. From the sounds of it, you have an 08 G35x. Interesting that you have the same issue. I was hoping a reflash of the computer would fix my problem. But, if an 08 has the same issue....maybe not.

Also, this isn't my first TQ converter "issue." Before, when the converter was locked up, if I let off the gas at 40mph, then lightly hit the gas, there would be a delay and a "thud" from the converter. It felt like slack in the drivetrain.

But, when I got my computer updated with the cruise control fix...... it went away.

I have this problem also. It happens to me when I'm cruising at a relatively slow constant speed.

Ok, ok, interesting thought. Thanks for sharing guys.

I will try a few things over the next couple of days and see if we're all talking about the same thing.

Anyone have this problem AFTER the most recent computer reflash? (sensitve throttle fix for 07 cars)

I don't have that done and I'm curious if it'll fix the issue.

It happened to me again today and this time I paid attention to my rpm gauge. It was exactly at 1500 rpms, just like DigMy35x said. I guess a trip to the dealer to see what's up is in order soon.

I don't know if I'd waste a trip to the dealership. You're going to have a hell of a time duplicating the problem (which they HAVE to do to fix it) and if you do duplicate it.... they'll just say it's "normal."

Which... it may very well be "normal" for these cars. I don't think anything is "broken" that can be fixed. It seems to be a programming issue.

If you do get something fixed, definitely let us know though!

Same issue for a while now. I've had mine to the dealer (not the one I bought from) about a month ago and they could not reproduce. They did flash the ECM to the lates rev code, but no change. Recently it got worse where it stays in 5th way too long.. down to near 1200 rpm at barely over 30mph and requires too much throttle to kick down.

Next step is bring to the dealer I purchased from. Very frustrating in around-town driving.

Hey All: 2007 G35X, with premium pkg. I've posted a referral to this at other threads on this forum. The described issue occurred to my 2005 Altima v-6 SL. That was front-wheel drive, dealer replaced tranny as it seemd to get worse over time. That did not help. My mechanic said what Silver saaid - it's the torque converter. Didn't have it at first but with some mileage on the clock, the Altima in stop n go traffic on the highway 25-35 mph was aweful. I never was able to get it rectified. It was a leased car. It takes a Lot Of Time going to dealers and trying to duplicate the problem... so I gave up. Anyway, I don't feel this on the G. Once or twice maybe, but nearly as bad as in the Altima. Electronics, Baby, Electornics. This is a consquence of cars that are computer "driven".
