Differential and Transmission Fluid Change

Does anyone here have a how-to and recommended fluids/intervals for a drain & refill?

Thanks!

I think the consensus on the board is to start doing a drain and fill on the AT at 30K and do that every 15K thereafter, and change the diff fluid every 60K

IMO Trans Flush at 30k is a waste unless you are constantly tracking or beating on your car. i think the Diff Fluid is pretty right on at 60 k.

I agree a flush is overkill at 30K, I was advocating a drain and fill for the 5AT. That only swaps out 4ish quarts out of 11 total. Cheap insurance in my book.

Thanks, guys. I'm certainly due for the 30k, i did bring it to the track (with more to come), so it probably wouldn't hurt to do it.

Would either one of you mind pointing me to a how-to for doing both? I've seen one for a 1st gen but am not sure if it applies.

I had my mechanic friend do my differential fluid change because I didn't think i could do it that easily with the tools that I have. The trans fluid drain/fill is easier than an oil change though.
1. Go buy 5 quarts of J/S Matic Fluid from the nissan or infiniti dealer (12-15 bucks a quart). Also mark a large clear jug with quart intervals at least up to five.

2. Remove the bolt that holds on the trans dip stick and then remove the dip stick. (It's right behind the engine by the firewall in the middle)
3. Put a warmed up car up on either ramps or the front on jack stands ( i used ramps)

4. Remove the drain plug on the transmission and drain it into the marked jug.

5. After it has stopped draining put the drain plug back (you can replace the crush washer, i didn't bother with it cause i couldn't get the old one off after 10 minutes of fooling with it) and then torque what's specified in the service manual.

6. Measure the amount of ATF that came out and replace that exact amount, replace the dip stick

7. Go drive around for 5 minutes making it shift often.

8. With the car running, check the ATF level per the service manual and top off /replace the bolt when done.

9. Go have a beer.

how much fluid did you get out of it by only draining the plug and not the radiator?

Did having it on ramps make less fluid come out?

thanks, miltoda, between that and the supplements i've read, it sounds rather simple... if not a little cumbersome.

I got 4.2 quarts out of mine. The plug is towards the back right of the pan so it probably helped get more of it.

Isin't there a filter in there that should be replaced periodically?

The 1st gen is exactly the same as 2nd for procedures.

I don't have a service manual, otherwise I wouldn't be here. Anybody have the torque spec for the auto transmission drain plug?
