Looks like I may also have a long drive as the dealer I am most likely getting the car from is 700 miles away (on interstate
).
Any suggestions on how to do a good breakin? I am just planning on varying engine rpm and speed (between 60-80) on the way back. And waiting till 1500 miles before I increase engine speed over 4000rpm.

I doubt it makes any difference- the engine is built like a rock, the only thing thats going to screw it up so that youd notice is not having enough oil in it. Otherwise, the VQ likes to be driven hard, you dont need to baby it. sure, let it warm up and all, and yea I wouldn't redline it till after 500mi, but seriously no harm will be done by taking a long drive a the same speed...

I set the 'REV' shift light to 4,000 rpms, which helps me remember to keep it under 4k. Plus, my son likes to scream 'shift!' whenever he sees it blinking, which drives my wife crazy. Bonus!

you know, i noticed a lot of you guys can't stand watching the odometer go up until you can really drive that thing hard..so if you want, i can take over your car until then...you know, just to make it easy on you
Remember.. it's not just the engine you are breaking in.
You are creating wear patterns on several components, rear-end, tranny, brakes, etc . So it's a good idea to take it easy for a few hundred miles at least.
Another aspect of break-in is for the driver. It gives you time to get used to the handling and power.
Heat cycles are very important for break-in. It's better to have more short trips than a few long ones. Vary speed on the Hwy.. drop down a gear every now and then. Don't use the cruise control.. vary your speed.
After 500 miles or so start running it up thru the rpm band. Don't do it at WOT, but bring it up a bit more every time and not under full load.
A careful break-in will help extend the life of the whole car and keep that new tight feeling.

This is strange, my dealer said with the new engine, there is virtually no break-in period, he said drive the crap out of it but just remember to change the oil at the right times and it'll be fine. O_o
ps-i have a demo car but i bought it with 24 miles on it. I wonder who tested it before me??
