Man, what a screamer as I descended down the on-ramp back onto the freeway. I held it to redline in 3rd and when I tugged the magnesium paddle to go into 4th the car literally LEAPED forward, further confirming Infiniti's advertised "Acceleration Swell" tuning.

'07 G35 Sport? $34,000.

New FX35 chrome 20's and Nitto 555's? $2,200.

Hearing that big 3.5 liter motor singing at 7,500 rpm? PRICELESS!
Swell is marketing hype for DOHC engines which get most of their power on top at higher rpms.. The leap you felt is the auto tranny hesitating and then engaging... that's your acceleration swell.. nothing magical going on..

The VQ in the past had been notoriously criticized for not having a linear power band. It would have massive mid range torque and then it would sort of start dying off fairly early (like 5k RPM).

The VQ35HR is their first VQ engine that really feels like it continues to develop power more and more as your foot is in it. For instance, the VQ35DE feels like the engine is gasping for air and your peak power feels to be delivered at like 4k rpm, whereas the HR engine feels like it's still building more power (more like a BMW engine).

I think that's why they're marketing it as an acceleration swell.

When I bought my G new a couple months ago, my dealer said there wasn't a break in period and to use 87 octane. I think I'll stick to the manual.

Now I'm at 3 months and only 1800 miles and they want me to bring it in for service 3month/3500 mile service. Don't think I'm going to listen to them on this plan either. What do you think??

Naw CarNutz, no hesitation. I bumped it up, it shifted immediately, and the car leaped forward. I've had Nissans with VQ engines since the early 90's (although I began buying Nissans as Datsuns and bought a brand new '72 240Z with the straight six) and this latest edition does indeed make power right up to redline. I'm with BrianV here.

wow its so hard to believe what many ppl are saying about the break-in period!! the link from other posters with that mototune guy seems legit, but the manual is another thing also, so i dont know which to believe. i just want my car to run strong and smooth when i get it in august!! im gonna have that car for maybe 5 years so i want it to be in perfect condition, i.e. broken in properly.

So I've finally passed the break in period and I'm consistently taking it above 4000 RPMs and it seems like I race off the lines just to feel the full performance of the car.

Does anyone feel bad pushing the car that hard after you've been babying it for the first 1200 miles? I feel like I've had a lot of bottled up aggression and I'm getting all that out...

Am I causing any damage by consistently taking it above 6500 now that breakin is over?

^^no, theres a reason why the VQ is award-winning: IT TAKES ABUSE! just dont overdo it like taking it to redline, or driving with the throttle stomped on EVERY single trip u go on

You paid $30,000+ for the thing, drive it however you please. If it breaks down, get a 2013 model some day

Edit: HOWEVER! Seeing as how my car had 4 miles on it when I got it, I decided that it would be best to not rip into it too much until around 600-800 miles. I did use the paddle shifters once so far to tear into a twisty road near my place (AWESOME experience) but that was for a less than 3 minute period.

I agree. Most of New Cars I have seen they tend to adapt to the drivers style. If you baby it from the beginning it will stay that way. I don't think most people will A$$ rape it since we pay more than 35K. Also, I have friends that had to drive over 1500K in two days straight because of their business and now that their car have more than 30K, that car drives very smooth.

I think you should be OK as long as you don't over do it. My work place is only 9 miles, so I have been driving at nite to add some mileage. So far I have 500 miles, but when I go to the freeway I crank it for a few secs then rev down and crank it up again for a few secs.

with all my mods i'm up to $42K, and i hate to admit it, but I tend to a$$ rape at least once a day, it's just too damn fun. never over red line, but i lay into it, that's for sure - i tickle 7600 all the time. i do tend to overmaintain though, ie synthetic at 1K and then every 3500 thereafter... but i let nissan do the oil changes....
