steering column issue (motorized)

I'm going to be taking my car into the dealership to get this repaired under warranty but I was wonderiong just for my curiosity if anyone else has this problem:

at every start, after the steering wheel/column has zipped into place, when I first lay my hands on the wheel and apply downward pressure, the steering wheel clicks down about five millimeters in my hands, to a lower position. Apparently, the column isn't properly "locking" into position in the vertical plane, until downward pressure is applied. After doing that, the column remains fixed and doesn't jiggle at all. However, this happens with EVERY start in the exact same way each time.

Anyone else have/had this problem? Thanks..

I have the same issue. If I pull down hard enough on the steering wheel or accidentally knock the steering wheel downwards it will do exactly as you described. But 99% of the time, I just start the car and begin driving without putting any downward force on the wheel, it won't do it and doesn't bother me.

Yes, have noticed this as well on a few occasions when I pulled down on the top of the steering wheel to assist in getting out of the car. It budges just very slightly as you mentioned, but it is noticeable.

have either of you had the car inspected for this?

seems like a potential safety issue if the lock completely fails....

Very good point. I will definitely notify the dealer during my next scheduled maintenance. I don't like the car taken apart if it's not necessary, but you're right, it could be a serious safety issue.

Wonder it's somehow related to this http://www.infinitihelp.com/Ownershi.../ITB07-008.htm

that's for cars equipped with the manual adjustment, not the motorized one.

I wonder if re-teaching your steering wheel position would make a difference... I haven't seen this issue on mine. I'm thinking it might be possible that the position you picked might be right between two positions and you are able to force it down to the next one. Might be worth a try to re-teach it to a slightly different position and see if it changes anything. If it fixes it, I wouldn't worry about it. If not, I would definitely take it in to be looked at.

i doubt it. it's not a "stepped" system. the motions are completely analog, so the locking mechanism should be as well.

regardless, you may be correct. but I don't want to "garage diagnose" a potential safety issue. my life is worth more than that...

Yep, exact same problem. The dealer put a new steering column on order last week after investigating this problem. They apparently tried to tighten something up as it moves less now but they intend to replace the assembly.

Yes, I noticed this on my car as well. Only when the steering column is initially moved into position. It would probably be fine if I didn't use the auto steering adjust during start up.
