Yearly. There is a cost but no prices so far. The previous generation updates are $190.

Note that it says:

HDD(Hard Disk Drive) Version 8.1 will be available in December 2007.

How do you access the HDD?
Is it a CD or DVD that you insert into the radio or some other method?

AFAIK, updates will be done via the CF slot. At least that's what I've read.

Anyone that gets this done please post your impressions of the upgrade. I'm reluctant to spend $200 bucks as well has probably another $200 to pay my dealer to upgrade the system if there are not any huge improvements.

My opinion is unless your area goes from an area of poor information to good information, it is probably not worth upgrading yearly. I waited nearly 4 years on my car to lower the per year cost.

At some point, the cost of builtin systems will have to drop further. When you can buy a portable one for as little as $100, and move it from car to car, spending $2000 for one fixed into the one car seems excessive. 4 years ago, you didn't get some features of the G35 unless you had Navi, but that doesn't seem to be the case anymore. And portable systems are getting better.

The integrated systems are still faster, easier to see in daylight, and less prone to theft, but I agree the current differential in pricing between the integrated and portable systems is ridiculous.
