Whistling noise '07 G35 Sedan

I've been searching for the cause of a whistling noise in my G35 for about a year now , and I finally finally figured it out. It's the grille. I duct taped off the front of the grille and the noise went away. I pulled off the pieces of tape one at a time and determined it was the top slot on the grill that was causing the whistling noise that would happen between 45 and 65 mph. I closed off the top slot in the grille from the back (duct tape and black sticky foam tape) and that fixed it!

I know this is an old thread, but mine started acting the same way after the repairs. Got to try this fix. Thanks solo poster, wherever you are!

It's actually pretty amazing how little of an offset in trim and body pieces will cause substantial wind noise. The trouble is always finding it. I think the OP's method of taping things off is spot on for rapid diagnosis. Like Mike said, these can often occur after you have any work done because things didn't get put back EXACTLY right. (I got it after a windshield change).

No kidding. I'm really having issues with this shop... other than this, i'm missing at least a dozen clips, some panels are still slightly misaligned, noticed some spots on the repainted hood and i can't get my headlights to align properly... one is just higher than the other, my intake is rubbing on an a/c line (i'm guessing that's what it is), etc.

Sometimes it sucks to know cars more than the average Jane and Joe.

^ man im sorry to hear you having problems with the shop, but if they dont fix it for free contact your insurance company(if they recommended this shop) and file a claim and they should take care of it.

As for the headlights, the driverside light is supposed to be a bit lower than the passenger side to avoid blinding oncoming traffic, so what youre experiencing might be normal.

Thanks. I figured the headlights weren't meant to line-up but my passenger light is a few mm above the bumper line... i got it close, but it looks like it's on an odd angle. I hope that makes sense.

Oh, more stuff. I've got overspray all over the car, some drips on the driver side door and a bunch of new swirls. <g> Fun.

From what iv read for the cars with AFS the best way is to have the dealer or someone with consult adjust the lights level through it since apparently if you use the manual adjuster it resets back to original settings, or that was at least what this person experienced with his lights (dont remember his name).

Im not sure how you convinced yourself to even drive off the car form the sjop without getting these issues resolved by them since it seems they have messed up quite a bit and should technically replace all the missing clips and detail the car to get rid of the over spray and swirls... reading your experience is getting me angry not sure how youre staying calm through this after waiting this long! Hope you get everything sorted out soon, keep us posted</rant>

The manual settings actually stay intact even without CONSULT. I've played with the headlights so much there was even a stretch of time i had it pointing high enough that you couldn't tell the difference between high and low beams Also, when the lights were first replaced under warranty, the dealership didn't align them... both were pointing down no more than 4 feet from the bumper. Had to use the fogs the first couple of nights just to "extend" the output. I aimed them up myself.

The problem is more like one headlight has the cut-off like this "_ _" with the other almost at a slant, like this "--_" (or \ if you prefer, although not as bad). I think it's because they actually didn't do anything to the passenger side of things.

I was just getting tired of all the issues i had with the shop. They did tell me to come back and they'd fix everything including filling in some pre-existing chips out of courtesy (i got lifetime repair warranties from both them and my insurance... so two warranties). I plan on just going to a different shop altogether.

And no detail from anyone else anymore. I spent a good time just removing the white specks from whatever they used to wax/polish the car!

Back to topic, i tried the tape method. The whistle is still there. I'm not sure what else could be causing it. The pitch and volume changes the faster i go and doesn't start until 60mph or so. But, it hasn't been as loud recently.

I did notice something else i never noticed before. When the engine is running and i open the hood, it seems the radiator fans are on full the entire time. It's almost like having a leaf-blower set on high-heat blowing right at you like an upside down air curtain coming from the gap between the fans and the engine block. Is that normal?

Does only do this when it's hot (engine and/or air temps)? How about after a cold start in the morning?

I know this is old but check the rubber strip on the front edge of the hood. That was the problem with mine, had it replaced and no more whistle
