Unhappy Oil Maintenance Screen reset. What am I missing?

I have a 2008 G35 Sedan.
On my way to have my oil changed the Maintenance Screen popped up with the oil can icon. Perfect timing since it was exactly 5K miles since last done.(I'm assuming the interval is set to 5K). I get home and try to reset it. No can do. I follow the manual's instructions and threads I've seen on here but can not find the screens they reference. This is my situation:
Screen shows message "Maintenance" and has a picture of an oil can. The only option displayed is the double box and it is for "Exit". I press "Exit"

Now I get this screen:
-----------------------------------------
Setting
>Skip >Detail
enter next
-----------------------------------------

If I select "Next" I get a screen that says "Settings not available See above" the only thing displayed "above" is the icon telling you to press the brake to start the car.
If I select "enter" I get a screen like this:
--------------------------------------------------------
warning x 0
>skip
>enter
------------------------------------------------------

from here no matter what I do it takes me back through the menus for "outside temperature" "Mpg" etc.
What am I missing???????

The menus/buttons are not very user-friendly. You have to use both buttons, so hit the TOP button to get "Settings", then the BOTTOM button to move between the entries (Skip, Alert, Maintenance, etc). Go to Maintenance, then TOP button to select it. In this sub-menu, use the BOTTOM button to get to the oil-life setting. In here, I can't tell you from memory but you'll see choices, including "reset" but more importantly, the menu tells you which buttons to use at this point.

The 5000 mile interval was set by someone as I don't believe it's hard-coded. In fact, you can change the interval to come one at the mileage you choose.

When I select "detail" from the Settings screen I get the "Settings not available See above" message. This is starting to drive me crazy!

THANK YOU!!!! That was it. Never would have guessed that the engine had to be running since most of these types of settings have to be done before starting the car. Just checked the manual again and it does say to have the ignition "ON". I misunderstood that to mean have the dashboard messages lit. Have a Happy Thanksgiving sir. You made my day!
