Ballast location / accessibility
Ballast location / accessibility
2008 G35 (sedan) - Can anyone confirm where the ballast is located and/or how to access it for replacement ? 2007-2008 model info only please. It appears that the location or how to get to it varies based on model years. Some require removing the bumper to allow removing the headlight assembly while it seems that on these years you can remove the shroud under the front bumper to access.
In case anyone comes across this in the future, it is not necessary to remove either the bumper or the headlight assembly/housing. Maybe it is on older or newer models and maybe it is on the coupe. This is not the case on a 2008 sedan (and probably the same on a 2007).
You start to access it like you would if replacing the headlight, fog light, and other bulbs, by removing the wheel well shroud. Jacking the car up and removing the tire(s) are probably optional but I did both. By removing the shroud, I should clarify that you likely need to do more than pull 3-5 push-clips and peel the shroud back like you can get away with when replacing bulbs. I removed it entirely which includes multiple fasteners on the underside of the front bumper. The ballast is fastened to the underside of the headlight housing and (2) of the (3) JIS screws are blocked by a mounting bracket for the headlight (I think it's this one). One fastener can be accessed if you get the angle right but the other is behind one of the slots shown in that bracket but doesn't line up with the slot. I had to Dremel a half-circle cut-out to allow my screwdriver to get a good, straight shot at it. You also need to make the opening large enough for the (small) washer on the screw. I'd recommend using a JIS screwdriver as well.

I've read many times that dealers won't replace the ballast. They insist it's not available separately and you have to replace the entire headlight assembly (housing, ballast, etc).
If you have a lift/hoist, I would think it would be even easier by going through the wheel well. Actually, remove the wheel well shroud entirely like I did and work from below while standing ..... vs laying on your back like most of us end up having to do !

There is no separate Nissan part number for the ballast, the dealership won't install aftermarket parts, thus their only option is the entire headlight assembly.
I know it's pretty stupid but that's the way it is, there are a few OEM parts on these cars that are not available except as an assembly.
I assume it's because someone somewhere decided that the ballast will fail at about the same time as the lens is suffering from oxidation and that people would never replace the lenses so they're "forced" to do so if it was sold as an assembly.

Maybe for other years there isn't, but for mine there is

This ballast fits many Infiniti models starting from 2007 and newer too.

This is 100% Infiniti part from their own corporate website here: https://parts.infinitiusa.com/p/Infi...474-8992A.html. The other link is from an Infiniti dealer in Arizona. Not Chinese that I know of unless Infiniti (Matsushita) sold the production rights for these parts.
What I meant was that everyone has read that dealers won't replace only the ballast. They say you can only buy the entire headlight assembly. Turns out what dealers were doing was buying the headlight assembly and the ballast separately (at least I'd think so because I can't tell if the headlight assembly comes with the ballast).
Curious what would happen if someone were to go to the parts counter at an Infiniti dealer and confirm availability of the part, then ask the service dept to replace the ballast, and be told "it's not available". Then tell them "Jimmy over at the parts counter just gave me the price and that he can get it in 2 days....".
