Why no nav/sat in Hawaii?
Why no nav/sat in Hawaii?
Does anyone why the nav/sat is not an availible options for infiniti's in hawaii ? I asked a salesman once, and he replied "There is no satellite for Hawaii". I asked about the Sat radio option, and he said " it runs on the same satellite". hmmm, i'm thinking NOT. GPS = GLOBAL postioning system. I know folks that hike with a Garmin handheld GPS here in Honolulu. Do the BMW's and lexus also lack the Nav option? I know for a fact that some companies do produce maps for hawaii, usually on the same dvd/cd for california. I could undestand no availibility for Sat radio, but GPS is availible in hawaii. Does anyone have any further info? BTW, a company called Zenrin makes the nav for infiniti, they get their hardware/software from Xanazi, and Navigation Technologies, respectively.

You should be able to use GPS systems in Hawaii. There are 24 GPS satellites orbiting the planet, and you should be able to "see" at least 4 of them from just about anywhere to get a position.
As for sat radio.. I know XM has two satellites, both in geosynchronous orbit, one over the Eastern US, and one over the Western US. Hawaii may not have a clear shot at the western satellite. I'm not sure about Sirius.

Yes different system. It's safe to say the the SAT/NAV "service" is not offered in Hawaii. That's why dealers usually don't bring in cars with those options.

The Nav system uses GPS. It should work just fine.
I've vacationed in Hawaii once. I find the Nav system to be useful in the city I'm living in, so I can see where it would be useful even on a single island in Hawaii.
Of course, I couldn't figure out why they have Interstate highways....

Re: Why no nav/sat in Hawaii?
The reason for the "interstate" is that they're actually planning on connecting all the islands someday.....

That would be "Interisland" -- you can't say "Interstate" unless you build a bridge to the mainland.

Royken,
Thanks for the clarification, I was actually quoting the Honda commercial we have here in Hawaii. The guy in the commercial said the same thing you did about the "interstate". Funny commercial!!!
