Re: OEM 17"s on coupe ?

I couldn't tell you how they compare to the 18's tires, considering those are supposedly "sport" tires, but so far these all-season looking tires on my 17's are pretty grippy.

I've taken them to the edge and back, rarely heard a peep out of them, but I do drive in a hot sticky climate. Although one time I was mad and tried to do a u-turn and squeeled the tires for a pretty long time, although they never lost grip and didn't fish-tail (good thing).....but that could happen with any kind of tire.

Overall compared to my previous cars "sporty" Kumho Ecsta 712's, they are pretty equal in grip.

But thats just my opinion.

the 18s are MICHELINE SPort. they are good in rain and dry but wouldnt trust them in a winter storm.

the 17s which are on the coupe are pretty grippy to my surprise. i tried drifting with them and doing some donuts in the rain ... the would catch grip pretty quick .... and thats with the VDC OFF. however on the 4 door coupe..... (not sure if they have the same tires or not) i drifted perfectly without any problems.

I used to have the stock 17"s on my Coupe, but changed them to the OEM 18"s. [censored], I noticed a BIG difference in grip and road handling. The 18"s feel so sticky and handles so much better. I'll probably keep the 17"s for long road trips though....You wouldn't believe the price for one tire on the 18"s.

The difference you are feeling is more likely due to the 18" rather than the 17" rims. 18's will handle much better, but 17's will drive much smoother.

Re: OEM 17"s on coupe ?

At least here in Canada, the 18s are equipped with the Pilot Sport (summer performance tire) and the 17s come with Bridgestone all season tires. The 18 rears are 10 mm wider than the 17s. All season tires suffer a lot of compromises, and while the Bridgestones are fair, they are not a full-on performance tire (That would be the S-03 Pole Position or the specials that Bridgestone made exclusively for the Enzo.) Michelin's flagship performance tires are super sticky when hot, slippery until warmed up, and useless when really cold. As a performance tire, they're awesome. I am a big fan of the Pilots, but the Bridgestones aren't that bad either. Apples and oranges- but in this context, nearly nothing to do with wheel size, and everything to do with compound and tread design.

Re: OEM 17"s on coupe ?

I took the G35c to an autocross at a racetrack a couple hundred miles from home. Couldn't fit the race rubber in the Z, so I used the wife's car. That morning it was puring down rain at the hotel, so I decided to run stock Goodyears, and needless to say, the rain line ended a mile from the track!

Anyway, I thought the goodyears were extremely slippery on the dry track and didn't like them at all. I DID like the way the G breaks into a 4 wheel drift as opposed to the enormous understeer of the Z though! also, automatics and a wide open autocross course dont mix well.

the goodyears i have on my 17"s (coupe) are decent tires.. they're nothing terrific.. they're not even comparable to any of the yokohama tires i've had on my previous cars, but they're okai..

i can't wait to get rid of them for the s-03s i have coming in wrapped around volks..
